Senator Barack O-Bomb-A and his Pro-War Policy
By Jacob Lovell

I wrote here a couple
weeks ago about the junior
senator from Illinois, Barack
Obama, and his policy of
continued warfare in the
Middle East. I feel I’ve not
given enough time to this
subject considering how
many of my supposedly
liberal friends are still
supporting this guy.
Barack Obama is a fan
of endless war, and only
through political doublespeak
and deceitful tactics has he
been able to convince his
supporters that he is not. I
will start from the beginning
(of the Iraq war).
In July of 2003, Obama
argued against a unilateral
approach to war with Iraq,
and that a multilateral
approach would have
been better so that “if we
ultimately had to overthrow
| Saddam Hussein ], we would
have built an international
coalition that could have
moved forward.” Notice
that he’s not against this
unjustified and pointless war,
he just wants more countries
fighting.
While running for his
current position in 2004 (If
that seems a little too recent,
keep in mind that he’s not

held a national political office
for even three years), Obama
told the New York Times,
concerning whether or not
he would have voted for the
war in Iraq: “What would I
have done? I don’t know.”
When asked about the pro
war votes of Senators Kerry
and Edwards, Obama told
National Public Radio, I
“I think that there is room
for disagreement in that
initial decision.”
These aren’t the
boldest statements against
the Iraq war.
In November of
last year, Obama said
that “According to a
Pew survey, 42 percent
of Americans now
agree with the statement
that the U.S. should
'mind its own business
internationally and let
other countries get along
the best they can on their
own.”’
Now, you would think
Obama would have realized
the sanity of the American
people here, that violent
intervention by the United
States is not the way to solve
things. You would also be
wrong.
No, Obama continues:
“We cannot afford to be a
country of isolationists right
now. 9/11 showed us that try
as we might to ignore the rest
of the world,our enemies will
no longer ignore us. And so
we need to maintain a strong
foreign policy, relendess in
pursuing our enemies and
hopeful in promoting our
values around the world.”
If this sounds familiar, it
is because you have heard it
before. Replace “our values”

with “our oil empire" and see
if it doesn’t sound a lot like
ol’ Dubya.
Furthermore, it is
ridiculous for Obama to
think that isolationism had
anything to do with 9/11.
Quite the opposite, actually,
as decades of bad Federal
policy —interventionism
in the Middle East is what
encouraged the kind of
hatred shown to us by
terrorists. These things that
the U.S. Federal Government
has done are in no way
isolationist: Overthrowing
the government of Iran;
Keeping tixx)ps and bases
all over the area; Bombing
countries like Iraq years
before 9/11 ever happened;
Economic sanctions that
were blamed for the deaths
of civilians and children;
Overt financial and weapons
support of Israel; On and on,
the list continues.
For Obama to pretend
that the U.S. Middle East
policy has not only been
non-interventionist, but that
the U.S. needs to intervene
more, is ludicrous.
Sadly, Obama believes
precisely this. In a speech
given in April of this year

before the Chicago Council
on Global Affairs, Obama
said:
“I reject the notion that
the American moment has
passed. I dismiss the cynics
who say that this new century
cannot be another when,
in the words of President
Franklin Roosevelt, we lead
the world in battling
immediate evils
and promoting the
ultimate good. I still
believe that America
is the last, best hope
of Earth. We just have
to show the world
why this is so. This
EYesident may occupy
the White House, but
for the last six years
the position of leader
of the free world has
remained open. And
it’s time to fill that role
once more.”
Leading the world
by battling immediate
evils. Not leading the world
by being friends with nations,
not leading the world by
being industrious, peaceful
people. His idea of leading
the world is to constantly be
at war with new and ever
changing "immediate evils”.
You see, to Barack
Obama jt 'snotthatunjustified,
preemptive warfare is
wrong. The problem is
just that public opinion
LI IE WEST GEORGIAN
has not been successfully
molded to support such
a pro-war outl<x>k. Such
molding of public opinion
is something he thinks he
can do well. Indeed, it is
clearly something he can
do successfully, as most of
his supporters are foolish
enough to think he is in any
way against the war we now
find ourselves mired in.
I’ll finish up by quoting
one last line from his
speech:
“No President should
ever hesitate to use force
- unilaterally if necessary
- to protect ourselves and
our vital interests when we
are attacked or imminently
threatened.”
Again, he shows his
favorable view of preemptive
warfare (“imminently
threatened”) to protect the
American empire and its
oil (“our vital interests”).
This time, he doesn’t even
bother to add the necessity
to have the backing of other
countries as he had in 2003.
So I ask you Obama
supporters: Do you want
another warmongering
George W. Bush in the
White House? If so, keep
supporting Obama. If not,
try finding a real pnvpeace
candidate. I suggest you
look up a guy named Ron
Paul.
