Lent
(Continued from page I)
ments, each one of which is a sign of penance and
reconciliation. The Sacrament of Penance or Re
conciliation is the supreme opportunity offered to
us to put ourselves right with God. The pope’s
message particularly emphasizes the importance of
the sacrament of reconciliation, saying the experi
ence of receiving God’s forgiveness “encourages us
to live in love, considering the other not as enemy
but as a brother.” The Holy Father points out that
“the Apostle Paul recalls that forgiveness is one of
the highest forms of practicing charity.” And “Lent
represents a propitious time to further deepen the
significance of this virtue.” I again ask all our
parishes to take a close look at the practice of
sacramental reconciliation. Every parish and mis
sion is to have set times for the celebration of the
sacrament on a weekly basis. Even if on some
occasions no one comes to confession, the avail
ability of a priest at stated times cannot but help to
further the regular practice of confession among
the faithful. Lenten penance services are also high
ly recommended. The value of this sacrament
should be the principal topic of at least one homily
at all Sunday Masses in each parish during the
Lenten season. Although, as the pope observes, it
sometimes seems as if “even the Sacrament of
Penance itself is thought by many to be insignifi
cant,” our Cathedral parish is experiencing a new
upsurge in the number of people celebrating the
Sacrament of Reconciliation since the upper church
reopened, with a new confessional, on November
29. People are waiting in line for the sacrament for
both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Prayer: We can enter into the Lenten liturgy at
the deepest level by participating in the liturgies of
Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, and in
those of the Easter Triduum. Please consider parti
cipating in the celebration of the Eucharist every day
during this holy season. During Lent, some parishes
may consider scheduling a weekly or even daily
hour of adoration before the exposed Blessed
Sacrament. The Stations of the Cross and the daily
recitation of the Rosary are also highly recommend
ed. In the Holy Father’s words, “ardent and confi
dent prayer to the Lord ... allows each person to
experience anew his mercy.”
Almsgiving: As the Holy Father points out, “A
heart reconciled with God and with neighbor is a
generous heart.” There are many worthy causes in
which we can give of ourselves, with and for the
poor. Among these are Operation Rice Bowl, the
Diocesan Development Appeal, and the collections
for Eastern Europe (Ash Wednesday), the Bishops’
Overseas Appeal (March 25) and the Holy Places
in Palestine (Good Friday). Our “Lenten offering
brings about an added richness of meaning if the
one making the offering is freed from resentment
and indifference, obstacles which keep us far from
communion with God and with our brothers and
sisters.
Through fasting, prayer and almsgiving this Lent,
may we “live the love of Christ in an ever more
joyful and generous way, a love which ‘does not
insist on its own way; it is not resentful; it does not
rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right’” (1
Corinthians 13: 5-6). In Saint Paul’s words, love
“bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. Love never fails” (/
Corinthians 13:7-8). Every word Paul says of love
can be said of Jesus Christ. May our Lenten jour
ney with him to the Father make it possible to
apply those words to each of us.
