To The Editor
TO THE EDITOR:
Regarding the article entitled
Traffic Safety-Car Statues He
resies, may I comment?
While the increase of irre
sponsibility on the road, and
reckless driving is just cause
for the concern of everyone,
and we agree something sure
ly needs to be done; let us not
in our regret over some who
abuse, forget those who are
sincere. No one can get sta
tistics on "state of mind."
Only God.
I refer to paragraph six,
last sentence, which 1 quote:
‘*ln most cases the purpose
Is not spiritual protection, but
a secularist excuse to act with
abandon.” Is it true that this
is generally the case? 1 would
be inclined to wonder rather
in this vein: How many have
been forcefully reminded to
watch and pray? How many
prayers are spontaneously sent
heavenward each day during
long and short runs in our cars
which take us almost every
where we go? 1 would rather
be on record for promoting
more use of prayerful remind
ers, not less. You have such
a wonderful opportunity to point
out the correct use of such
things, being an editor, and I
hope you will reconsider. The
idea was originally born of a
great need in our era of me
chanized travel.
I can understand the righteous
indignation which we all feel
to witness violations of the law,
with sacredness flaunted so
blasphemously; but after the
Initial feeling of irritation has
passed, I am sure a re-eval
uation might be made in favor
of the good reminders, which
were intended to produce the
opposite result.
WE USE statues in our homes,
churches, etc., which need no
justification as prayer-aids.
These sacramentals are dear
to the hearts of all Catholics
when considered thoughtfully.
Nothing achieves one hundred
percent reception or recogni
tion, so we cannot relegate into
oblivion good things because
some do not appreciate sacred
things, even to the extent of
treating them sacriligiously.
SO I hope you will under
stand why I hope you will go
to bat for St. Christopher,
(bearer of Christ) and statues
meant to influence the driver
instead of a vacant shelf, which
inspires no one. We all need
constant reminders to be more
constant in good thoughts. Com
mon sense and conscience de
cree that abuse of such things
brings God’s disdain, not Grace.
Good luck with your news
paper, and 1 noted with interest
the article on page 6, entitled
Professor Assails Student
Reading—commenting on high
school reading lists. Not long
ago, a Nun wrote an article in
Our Sunday Visitor asking that
this matter be looked into. I
have wondered about some of
the books my high school chil
dren were required to read, and
was told it was recommended
reading for students. I hope
something will be done to sup
ply better material in the future,

FAMILY SUNDAY
A rchbishop A ddresses
HNS About Council
The Recent Annual Family
Communion Breakfast at the
Shrine of the Immaculate Con
ception witnessed a record at
tendance for a Holy Name Sun
day. More than 275 persons
were served at the breakfast
including Holy Name members,
their families and friends.
The Holy Name Society ini
tiated this project four years
ago, encouraging the members,
along with the parishioners to
receive Communion in family
units and stay for the break
fast meeting held after Mass
in the Social Hall.
THIS YEAR Archbishop, Paul
J. Hallinan celebrated the Mass
and was the principal speaker at
the breakfast.
The Archibishop congratu
lated the Franciscan Fathers
and the officers of the Holy
Name Society for sponsoring the
family Communion. He spoke
on the recent Ecumenical Coun
cil, advising 2,300 Bishops were
in attendance and 600 Bishops
spoke during the 2 month period.
He outlined the relationship of
the Council to the Archdiocese
of Atlanta...the progress of the
Council and progress of the
Church in Atlanta in recent
years.
The Archbishop stressed the
basic principles of the Church
will not change, although new
approaches and new methods
will be initiated. A good ex
ample occurred during a recent
session of the council, when the
voting was computed on IBM
machines in the shadow of St.
Peters...new methods with old
world background.
The Archibishop reminded
the group as the world moves
along we must examine our
faith...we must rethink some ox
the devotions and change with
the times. TTiese changes will
take time, understanding and
education of religions and lay
people.
PROMINENT LEBANESE-AMERICAN
Mrs. Ferris Thebit
Buried Last Week
Funeral services for Mrs.
Ferris Thebit, formerly Mrs.
Madelle Maloof of Rome, Geor
gia, were held from the Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception
last week. A member of a dis
tinguished Lebanese-American
family, which has given the
Church two archbishops and
numerous priests and nuns, she
died suddenly in the presence
of her son, Dr. Louis J. Maloof,
Oglethorpe University pro
fessor.
Born in 1895, she and her
husband, Charles S. Maloof,
escaped Ottoman oppression by
coming to America in 1911. They
settled in Rome, Georgia, where
Mr. Maloof’s father was a lead
ing merchant. When her hus
band died in 1918, Mrs. Maloof,
whose maiden name was also
Maloof, assumed the family re
sponsibilities with four child
ren. In 1932, she married
Ferris Thebit.
A DESCENDANT of the Chas-
sanids, the first ruling family
in history to accept the Ca
tholic Faith as a state reli
gion, her mother was buried
alive by the Ottoman Turks
during World War 1, when the
family estate in Lebanon was
confiscated. Mrs. Thebit’s life
long comment was: "I would
rather live as a pauper in a
free America than in a castle
abroad."
Though a member of St. Jo
seph’s Maronite Church, her
devotion to the Blessed Mo
ther prompted her request that
she be buried from the Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception.
In his eulogy, the Rev. Jo
seph Abi-Nader, St. Joseph’s
pastor, extrolled "this mo
ther’s piety, charity, and pa
tience in her suffering.” He
said that "Because she was a
fervent Catholic, she made
prayer the most important duty
in her life. She conversed
with God as familiarly as a
child with his parents.”
CELEBRANT of the Solemn
Requiem was the Rev. Rene
Maynard, O.F.M. of the Shrine,
with the Rev. Theophilus Mc
Nulty, O.F.M., Georgia Tech
Chaplain, Deacon, and the Rev.
Felix McGrath, O.F.M., Ogle
thorpe University Chaplain. Sm-
Subdeacon Master of Cere
monies was the Rev. Linus
Tigus, O.F.M.
Pontifical absolution was
pronounced in the Maronite Rite
by the Rt. Rev. Joseph F. Abi-
Chedid, rector, St. Elias
Church, Birmingham, Maronite
Chor-Bishop of Alabama, as
sisted by Father Abi-Nader and
the Rev. William Haddad, pastor
of St. John’s Melkite Church.
Chor-Bishop Abi-Chedie also
presided at the burial in the
family plot in Mt. Calvary Ca
tholic section of Westview Ce
metery.
In the sanctuary were the Ve
ry Rev. Mark Mages, O.S.B.,
prior, St. Bernard Abbey, Cull
man, Ala., the Reverends Leo
nard Kelly, O.F.M., Shrine pas
tor, Adrian Donauer, O.S.B.,
of St. Bernard College; Simon
Cherkauskas, O.C.S.O., Our
Lady of the Holy Ghost Abbey,
Conyers; John M. McDonough,
pastor, St. Mary’s Church,
Rome; Phillip Dagneau, S.M.,
of Marist College; and Patrick
C. Connell, chaplain, Our Lady
of Perpetual Help Cancer Home,
Atlanta.
PALLBEARERS were Mes
srs, Herbert Azar, Robert Ma
loof, Abe Abraham, Tommy A-
braham, Joe Simon, N. Simon.
Altarboys were from the Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception.
Mrs. Thebit is survived by
her husband, two sons, Dr.
Maloof, and John W. Maloof,
Atlanta attorney; two daughters,
Mrs. Francis Shikany and Mrs.
Michael Mansour, one sister,
Mrs. Malakey Habib Maloof,
a former Atlantan now residing
in Zable, Lebanan; five grand
children and a number oi nieces
and nephews, all of Atlanta.
SIGNS SHOW
Religion Is Now Relevant
PALM BEACH, Fla. (NC)~
The selection of Pope John XXIII
as Time magazine’s man of the
year shows that religion has
become "intensely relevant”
to the 20th century, Bishop John
J. Wright of Pittsburgh said
here.
Bishop Wright said such 19th
century agnostics and atheists
as French writer Ernest Re
nan would have thought it "ab
surd” to suppose "that the
Pope of Rome, smack in the
middle of the 20th century and
at the opening of the space age,
would be chosen man of the
year by a strictly secular news
weekly of worldwide circula
tion.”
"THEY would have been fur
ther astonished that the choice
of the Pope would be made
precisely in that New World
to which, even then, the 19th
century looked as the place
where most of all "reason”
would finally triumph over
everything the papacy and reli
gious values represented,” he
said.
Bishop Wright, in a lecture
for the benefit of the new Cena
cle Retreat House in Lantana,
Fla., said the "amazing per
sonality" of Pope John is one
reason for his appeal to the
public imagination. He added,
however, that many other events
in this century have contribu
ted to making religion "the
powerful force that it is today."
AMONG these the Bi
shop listed the rise of mili
tant atheism through the com
munist revolution.
"This development,’’he said,
"terrifying still in its threat,
has not been without providen
tial aspects: it has resulted
in a more intelligent Christian
witness in some parts of the
world, a purged religious life
in other parts of the world,
and a fresh courage in pro
claiming Christ on the part
of those who now love for His
own sake alone.”
nous manner" in which Pope
Pius XII used the teaching of
fice of the Holy See to exer
cise "a worldwide intellectual
and spiritual leadership with
out precedent in centuries.”
The convening of the Se
cond Vatican Council, "in all
probability the major religious
event of the 20th century.”
AMONG other causes noted by
Bishop Wright for the increased
influence of religion:
Pope Pius XI’s settlement
of the so-called "Roman ques
tion" and the Church’s result
ing escape from defunct contro
versies and its emergence into
the area of 20th century con
cerns.
