JEWISH GROUP
School Textbooks Twist
Some Religious History
WASHINGTON (NC)— A Jew
ish spokesman said here that
most public grade school social
studies textbooks fail to take an
objective view of religious his
tory and have “definite sectar
ian tendencies.”
The charge is based on a
study of 120 leading textbooks,
according to Samuel Dalsimer
of New York, chairman of the
program committee of the Anti-
Defamation League of B’naiB’-
rith.
THE TEXTS, he said, favor
Protestantism over Catholici
sm and Christianity over Jud
aism. They also ignore the
pluralistic nature of American
life, he added.
Dalsimer reported these to be
conclusions from a three-year
study sponsored by the League.

CHICAGO, (NC) — The
1962 Thomas More Association
Medal has been awarded to
Random House, Inc., New York
publisher, for publishing Robert
Bolt’s play, “A Man for All
Seasons” in book form.
Dan Herr, association presi
dent, said it is the first time in
the eight-year history of the a-
ward that it has been presented
for a play.

He spoke at the 50th annual
meeting here of the league.
In support of the study’s con
clusion that an anti-Catholic
bias exists in the texts, Dalsi-
mer’s announcement said:
"IN THEIR treatment of the
Reformation, many anti-Pro-
testant measures of persecution
are detailed but similiar steps
taken by Protestants are not
discussed.
"The Reformation is pre
sented as a battle in which the
forces of good freed themselves
from the forces of evil, rather
than as a product of the peculiar
social and political conditions of
the time.’*
Dalsimer also said that the
textbooks neglect Jewish hist
ory and Judaism after the Bible
period. In addition, he reported,
the relationship of Jesus to the
Jews is "often portrayed in a
manner too superficial to dis
pel misconceptions underlying
anti-Semitism.
THE STUDY found he said,
that only 5 of the 11 texts that
discussed Hitler and Nazism-
mentioned the subject of the
persecution of Jews. Of the five,
one offered no indication at all
as to whether Hitler’s policy
was moral or not, he said.
Persecution of groups other
than Jews was also mistreated,
Dalsimer said. "The textbook
coverage of the Inquisition and
the Reformation generally pic
tured Catholics as the agents
of reaction and Protestants are
exclusive advocates of enlight
enment,’* his announcement
said.

State Brotherhood Week
Proclamation Is Signed
Governor Carl Sanders’ first
official act as Chief Executive
was to sign a Proclamation de
signating February 17-24th as
Brotherhood Week in the state
of Georgia.
In his proclamation, the Gov
ernor called upon Georgians
to use the occasion of Brother
hood Week for "renewed dedi
cation to the ideals of greater
tolerance, understanding,
friendship, and cooperation
among all our citizens, and
greater respect for the diff
erences and beliefs of our
people.
"A FULL awareness of the
responsibility to increase the
IRISH PRIMATE
spirit of Brotherhood is, ’’ he
said, "essential to the progress
of our state and nation.”
Sanders is serving as Hono
rary Chairman of Brotherhood
Week which is sponsored annu
ally by the National Conference
of Christians and Jews. The
National Conference is a civic
organization which provides
ways for Protestants, Cathol
ics, and Jews to work together
on matters of public concern
without compromise of their
basic convictions.
It carries on a year-round
educational program through
schools, churches, colleges, la
bor organizations, civic clubs,
and other organizations with
the purpose of improving re
lationships and understanding
between people of all religious,
cultural, and ethnic groups.
Georgia Regional director of
NCCJ, Don McEvoy, said of
Governor Sanders’ proclamat
ion: "This is a perfect example
of putting first things first. We
are indeed fortunate that the
leadership of our ftate is in the
hands of a man who understands
how closely tied together are
progress, prosperity, and im
proved intergroup relations. I
hope the citizens of Georgia
will heed Governor Sanders’
call and make Brotherhood
Week a genuine showcase for
democracy."
Cardinal D’Alton Dies
DUBLIN -NC- John Cardinal
D’Alton, who died here at age 80,
was known for his scholarship,
opposition to tyrannical forms
of government and his efforts
for national unity.
The Archbishop of Armagh
and Primate of All Ireland died
(Feb. 1) in St. Vincent’s Nurs
ing Home after an illness of
just three days after he had att
ended a Requiem Mass in Lon
don for William Cardinal God
frey, Archbishop of Westmin
ister, who died on January 22.
THE DEATH of the two pre
lates reduces the number of
cardinals to 83.
Known as a classical scholar,
John D’Alton resembled the
novelized concept of the
scholar: shy, retiring and bene
volent looking.
When it was announced in
December, 1952, that he would
be named to the cardinalate,
the Irish Times, a Dublin dally
under Protestant control, com
mented: "Even with the added
dignity of the Red Hat, John
Francis D’Alton will remain at
heart a simple scholar.”
THE TIMES also said; "He
has that complete unconsciou
sness of dignity possessed only
by a man whose natural dignity
is unassailable."
Archbishop D’Alton was pro
claimed a cardinal by Pope Pius
XII at the consistory of January
12, 1953.
In 1957 a plan drawn up by
the Cardinal for a united Ire
land was placed before the
Prime Ministers of the British
Commonwealth of Nations
meeting in London.
IT PROPOSED that the nor
thern part of Ireland, instead of
remaining a part of the United
Kingdom, be included into a
federation of northern and sout
hern states comprising the en
tire island. The Cardinal prop
osed that the federation be
associated within the British
Commonwealth as a republic on
the same basis as India was at
the time.
The plan received widespread
support but did not reach high
er echelons. One Catholic edi
tor commented that no Irish
politican was willing to push it
and risk being snubbed by the
United Kingdom.

My dear People:
It is sound advice, right from the Bible, that before we build,
we look at our needs and resources. The Church in northern
Georgia has been looking at its needs, and doing a great deal
about them, for more than a century.lt is time for a steady
look at our resources - and neither buildings nor money are as
important as our first resources - our Catholic people.
We need to know more than we do about our Catholic growth
- how many Catholics are there, where are they, how fast is the
growth? Two examples - how many six-year olds we have in 1963,
how many we will have in 1973.Howmany Catholics are over 65?
To locate our new parishes, build our churches, staff our schools,
plan our welfare program, the Archdiocese must have every
available fact and figure.
THE FIRST Archdiocesan Census will be taken up March 3rd,
- a month from today, the first Sunday of Lent. It is the respon
sibility of our Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men, but since
we will need 5,000 census-takers, we are asking both men and
women to volunteer to their pastors for this task. The actual
census should take only four hours, 2:00 P. M. to 6:00 P. M.,
March 3rd. Teams of two will go, door-to-door, over all city
areas. The most modern means of processing, the IBM card
system will be used to give the totals. Publicity of every kind-
newspaper, radio and television- will be used so that everyone
in northern Georgia will know that the Catholics are taking a
Census.
We ask your help. Parish chairmen and captains have been
named; the volunteer census-takers are now being assigned.
Please give your name to your pastor for this great work. The
Census is an apostolic venture in which you go out as a repre
sentative of your Church, a true ambassador of Christ. Our
children and all those who are sick or disabled are asked to pray
that it will be a success, - areal success, an apostolic success.
THROUGH the Georgia Bulletin, our archdiocesan weekly
newspaper, the pulpit and the schools, you will be kept aware of
the plans. What we need now is an army of census-takers
willing to give a few hours to their Church. I am confident that
every able-bodied Catholic adult will have an active part in this
Census - our most important project for 1963.
May God bless the 34,000 Catholics we know about, and the
many more that we don’t - and help us to locate them 1
With every good wish,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Paul J. Hallinan
