Cardinal Newman Week
Set For Feb 24-March 2
Catholic students at over 850
secular colleges and universi
ties will observe the week of
February 24 -March 2 as Car*
dinal Newman Week. Over 600,
000 students, Newman Cha-
lains, Catholic faculty mem
bers and friends interested in
the Newman Apostolate will fo
cus their attention on an Eng
lish Churchman of the 19th
Century, John Henry Cardinal
Newman.
Noted as a scholar and writer
even before his death in 1890,
Newman’s reputation for per
sonal sanctity has led to the
introduction of his Cause for
Beatification, which has been
formally accepted for study by
the Congregation of Rites.
SPECIAL lectures, sympo
sia, round table discussions,
sermons, and articles in New
man Center publications will
present aspects of the life and
writings of Newman. Some New
man Centers will feature book
displays of the Cardinal’s writ
ings, along with biographies,
anthologies, and other studies
of Newman. Prominently fea
tured at many Newman Cen
ters will be the sculptured fig
ure of Newman, commissioned
by the National Newman Club
Federation and executed by the
Los Angeles sculptor, CarlRo-
manelli.
Cardinal Newman Week also
brings attention to the vigorous
and growing apostolate of the
Church to the secular campus
community. In an age when a
college education means so
much for the future of young
men and women—and for the
future of the society in which
they shall play leading roles—
the response of the Church to
this challenge of bringing pas
toral care and religious edu
cational programs to the thou
sands in secular colleges as
sumes critical proportions for
the years to come.
Dramatic strides have been
made in the past ten years in
providing Catholic Centers,
fulltime chaplains and other
personnel, with a well develop
ed pastoral and educational
program for Catholics attend
ing secular colleges. Yet in
many ways only a beginning
has been made. So much more
for so many more still needs
to be done if the Church is
going to reach these students
effectively, and exert an apos
tolic influence in the campus
community. Cardinal Newman
Week highlights a modest pride
in what has been thusfar ac
complished, but speaks much
more eloquently of what still
needs to be done.
ONE HUNDRED years ago,
when John Henry Newman was
a priest sixty-one years old,
one would have had to be a
seer, and would have probably
been called a fool to predict
that Newman was destined to
have an influence on the lives
of thousands in the 20th Cen
tury. But throughout the his
toric span of the Catholic
Church, certain events often
transpire which later seem to
have been directed by the spe
cial Providence of God.
