CENTENNIAL RECALLS
Civil War Battlefield Nuns
Were ‘Ministering Angels’
BY THOMAS E. KISSLING
(N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE
The official celebration of the
centennial of the Battle of Get
tysburg, Pa., held July 1-3,
recalls a little-known chapter in
American Civil War history—
the heroic services of the Cat
holic Sister - nurses who
swarmed onto the scene of the
battle shortly after its ending.
No marker to their self-
sacrificing labors stands among
the hundreds of monuments er
ected in the Gettysburg National
Park. Even the latest publicat
ion of the U. S. Civil War
Centennial Commission re
cords the work of these angels
of mercy throughout the entire
war period in only four lines of
a 44-page booklet, "Our Women
of the Sixties."
A HALF-MILE south of the
village of Emmitsburg, Md., and
about ten miles from the memo
rable and decisive battle field
of Gettysburg, Pa., was located
the central house of the Sisters
of Charity of St. Vincent de
Paul, founded there a half a
century before the war by
Blessed Ann Elizabeth Seton.
Little did their foundress re
alize that Sisters of her com
munity would one day be called
upon to contribute heroic acts
of charity in caring for the
wounded of America’s bloodiest
battle.
Although there was no offic
ial tabulation of the losses, one
historian estimated that of the
Union troops 3,155 were killed
and 14,529 were wounded. The
Confederate losses were put at
3,903 killed and 18,735 wounded.
Among the Union killed and
wounded were many who receiv
ed the general absolution and

blessing given to them on July
2, 1863, by Father William Cor
by, C. S. C., of Notre Dame
University, chaplain of the 88th
N. Y. Infantry, the "Irish Bri
gade." Others were in the Pol
ish Legion under CoL (later
Gen.) Wladimir B. Krzyzano-
wski.
THE DECISIVE Battle of Get
tysburg, turning point of the
war, was fought for three days,
Wednesday through Friday, July
1 to 3, 1863. On Saturday, July
4, a torrential rain set in and
the dirt roads became almost
impassable for wagon trains lo
aded with wounded.
This was the scene which con
fronted Father James F. Bur-
lando and a group of the Sis
ters of Charity on Sunday morn
ing, July 5, when they left Em
mitsburg for the battlefield.
"After great difficulty they ar
rived,” records one of the war
diaries. "Never did human eyes
behold such a spectacle. Sol
diers, slain or half dead, lay
before them, in ghastly heaps.
Some were calling for aid and
others gasping alongside hund
reds of breathless steeds. . .
Here among these ruins of life,
thousands of guns, side arms,
wheels, projectiles, and all
sorts of military accoutre
ments were promiscously sca
ttered.
"INTO THE midst of these
grim ravages of war went these
noble messengers of peace and
charity, with hardly an Inch of
ground to step on, and helped
pick up the wounded and carry
them to farm wagons which had
been requisitioned as ambulan
ces."
Another eye witness said:
"The White Cornette of the
Sisters of Charity fluttered like
angels* wings throughout this
scene of blood and desolation.
At one place a Sister admin
istered a cordial, at another her
companion, was whispering the
Holy Name in the ear of a
man whose life was fast slip
ping away.
"Seated upon a low stump of
a shattered tree, was a vali
ant young nun (Sister Petron-
illa Breen) who was hurriedly
preparing compresses nec
essary to staunch the flow of
bullet-split blood. To supply a
shortage of bandages these ‘An
gels of Gettsyburg* removed
some of their own garments,
which were quickly torn
into strips and applied to the
bodies of bruised and broken
and bleeding men."
Her companion on this mis
sion of mercy was Sister Jul
iana Chatard, sister of the Most
Rev. Francis S. Chatard, later
Bishop of Indianapolis.
The chaplain of the Sisters*
Emmitsurg community, writ
ing to his Superior General, on
July 8, 1863, recounts his ex
perience of journeying with
some Sisters into the village of
Gettysburg, where churches,
schools—all available buildings
in fact—were converted to hos
pitals (19 in all). The Catholic
Church of St. Francis Xavier
was one of them. They succes
sfully passed through several
barricades and patrols, and al
ong roads with the ruins of
burned houses, the dead of both
armies, and many dead horses,
thousands of guns, swords, and
wrecked vehicles and came upon
a scene of great confusion.
"EACH HOUSE, each temple,
the Court House, the Protes
tant Seminary were filled with-
wounded; and still there were
many thousands upon the field
of battle. It was impossible
to attend to all. I placed two
Sisters In each of the largest
improvised hospitals, I heard
some confessions and then re
turned to Saint Joseph’s.
"Very early the next day I
started with more Sisters and
reinforcement of provisions.
Meanwhile, supplies had been
sent by the Government. Many
Sisters are employed in this
town transformed into a hospi
tal to solace and relieve suffer
ing humanity.
"The Sisters were placed in
charge of the Methodist Church
Hospital, by the medical author
ities. During a prolonged period
of service they received from
the .members of the congregat
ion and lay nurses the greatest
courtesy and assistance. The
Sanitary Commission was also
very prompt and generous in
filling each requisition for sup
plies made by die nuns.

Orthodox Disavow
Group’s Bible Ban
NEW YORK, (NQ — The
Greek Orthodox Church of North
and South America has dis
claimed a pronouncement by the
National Council of Churches
asking for an end to devotional
use of the Bible in public
schools.
In a letter to council presi
dent J. Irwin Miller, Archbis
hop Iakovos, Primate of the
Greek Orthodox Church, said
that die council's pronounce
ment "is not without giving"
certain "godless forces com
fort when it says ‘neither true
religion nor good education is
dependent upon the devotional
use of the Bible in thp public
school program.’ *’

ment on religion and public
schools had at one point almost
split the council's board meet
ing. A spokesman for Archbis
hop Iakovos had stated at the
meeting that if the pronounce
ment were adopted in its origi
nal form it might be "neces
sary for the Orthodox Church to
review its present position and
relationship with the council."
The Orthodox Church has
been a member of the council
since 1950.
In his letter, Archbishop Ia
kovos also took issue with the
council’s statement that "at
tempts to establish a ‘common
core’ of religious beliefs to be
taught in public schools have
usually proven unrealistic and
unwise."
HE said that "unless we in
sist that a ‘common core’ of all
sincere faiths must be a belief
in and dependence on God, and
unless we are not afraid to have
this prime truth be an educa
tional premise in our public
schools, we are on our way to
losing the struggle" involving
whether or not the concept of
God is to be foremost in our
civilization.
"Unwittingly, it seems to
me," Archbishop Iakovos con
tinued, "the National Council
of Churches pronouncement as a
whole strengthens the hand of
those who would like our educa
tion to be taught without a men
tion of God or the Gospel in
which we believe."
"Therefore," he concluded,
"the Greek Orthodox Church of
North and South America must
disclaim it and dissociate itself
from it."

‘PLANNED PARENTHOOD'
Episcopal Church Plans Clinic
DETROIT, Mich. (RNS) —
A birth control clinic, operated
by the Planned Parenthood Lea
gue, will open in July in the
Protestant Episcopal Church of
the Resurrection in suburban
Detroit.
The Rev. Henry L. Parker,
the church's Negro rector, said
"we are allowing our facilities
to be used for this type of pel-
gram (because) the church is a
hub for all types of services."
ANSWER TO LAST
WEEK’S PUZZLE
A LEAGUE spokesman said
the clinic will be the first in
a Detroit church and probably
the first in any church in Amer
ica. It will give, on request,
birth control information, in
cluding the rhythm method, and
dispense devices.
Medical director ( of the clinic
is Dr. Ralph Ten Have of the
University of Michigan’s School
of Public Health. It will have a
professional staff of four per
sons.
A statement by the Rev. Don
ald F. Schroeder, director of
family life and public affairs for
the Detroit Council of Churches,
said the interdenominational
group has no plans to promote
similar clinics in churches.
He said, however, the council
was serving as a clearing house
for clergy seeking to get in touch
with the Planned Parenthood
League.
