St. Pius' Golden Lions open
ed their ’63-’64 football cam
paign at . the new Joseph Bean
Stadium with a 16 to 0 victory
over Lovett. A 66 yard touch
down pass from Jimmy Darden
to Denny Wigbels brought the
crowd of 3,000 to its feet late
in the first quarter. Paul Fa-

score.
Most of the first half was
spent in a defensive battle be

and mid-field. In the second

line. On the next play Joe
Mulvihill tackled Lovett quar
terback Bill Leonard in the end
zone for a safty.
FOG ROLLED in over the
field during the halftime. The
Archbishop was a ghostlike fig
ure to the people in the stands
as he gave a speech from the
field at halftime.
At the outset of the second
half, neither team could move
the ball. However, late in the
third quarter speedy Denny
Wigbels started around right
end, reversed his field, and

didn't stop until he had scored.
The play covered 48 yards and
was Wigbels’ second score of
the evening.
COACH BILL Conley’s Lo
vett team played an inspired
game. However, they could not
move the ball against the Gold
and White defense, Ed Lacy, who
was hurt early in the game,
Joe Mangan, and Paul Faletti
played well on defense for the
Golden Lions.
St. Pius' next game is with
South Hall. The game will be
played at South Hall on Friday*
September 13.

President said “the role of
youth in the lay apostolate is a
reai and special one. They are
in a position by their example
to influence society according
to Catholic Christian ideals and
to act as a link between the Ch
urch and civil society."
HE CONCLUDED his mess
age, which was addressed to
Msgr. Frederick J. Stevenson,
national director of the National
Council of Catholic Youth, by
extending his wishes “for a fru
itful and successful observance
of this week.”
Richard Cardinal Cushing,
Archbishop of Boston, also is
sued a statement in connection
with the National Catholic Youth
Week.
HE NOTED that the Week's
theme was both appropriate and
challenging. “Appropriate be
cause of the emerging import
ance of the laity in the life
of the Church,” he said, and
“challenging because the young
people who will be influenced
by your messages to them will
find in it a reminder of their
present responsibilities.”
Cardinal Cushing told Msgr.
Stevenson that he prayed that
“your jealous labors for our
young people may bear abun
dant and permanent fruit, as
those whom God destines for
tomorrow’s burdens become in
creasingly aware of their dig
nity as Christians.”
The observance will involve
8,000 ,000 Catholic youth in par
ish CYO's, grammar schools,
high schools and colleges ac
ross the nation.

St. Joseph’s Tops
Lithonia, 26-18
BY JESSE BRANNEN
Saint Joseph High School, with
its first seniors in the lineup in
three years, proved that it in
tends to make its mark in Re
gion 4B West football, by stop
ping Lithonia High in the open
ing game of the 1963 season.
Over 1200 enthusiastic fans
watched Coach William Dapra-
no’s Fighting Hawks surge to a
26-18 defeat of the Bulldogs
Friday night, September 6, at
the Lithonia Home Field.
SENIOR quarterback BobOr-
tiz was a standout in the en
counter, as he gained 143yards
in 13 carries, passed for 41
yards, and scored three times.
A highlight of the game came
early in the third quarter, when
Ortiz faked beautifully to his
halfback and, receiving excel
lent blocking, raced 49 yards
to paydirt and St. Joe’s final
touchdown.
Saint Joseph’s overwhelming
offensive power was due mostly
to its hard-hitting forward wall.
Some outstanding men up front
were center Tony Love, guards
John Jobson and Jimmy Egen,
and tackles Ed O’Connor and
Ronald Martins.
LINE COACH Thomas McDe-
vitt's warriors consistently
opened gaping holes in the Li
thonia line, through which
Tommy Phillips (FB) and Mike
Phillips (HB) each churned up
54 yards of Bulldog real estate.
Other ground gainers for the
Hawks were Rick Jascomb (17-
yds,), Bruce Hill 9 yds.), Tony
Lintini (7 yds.), and Jerry Ces-
nick (5 yds.). In the passing
department Jim Frazier hauled
in one of Ortiz' bombs for a
33-yd. gain. And Larry Downing
snared two aerials for a net
gain of 27 yds,, one of which
was thrown by sophomore quar
terback Irving Pifer.
ST. JOSEPH scored twice in
the first quarter and once again
in the second, rolling up 188
yds. (total offense) in the first
half. Lithonia could only score
once in the half, and the Ma
roon and White's superb de
fense limited them to only 63
yds.
In the second half, Lithonia
went to the air and scored twice.
The Hawks picked up another TD
however, and crushed the Bull
dogs in total offense for the en
tire game, finishing with 349
yards gained, and stopping the
Black and Gold with a cold 92
yds.
Dennis Fitzgerald was the
leading tackier, with five to his
credit. Other defensive stal
warts were Jim Egen (4), Ron
Martins (4), Jim Frazier (4),
Tom Hart (3), and Ed O’Con
nor (3).
