Lay Apostolate To
Implement Council
VATICAN CITY (NC)--The
main aim of the forthcoming
Third World Congress for the
Lay Apostolate will be “tomake
known, and help in Implement
ing, decisions of the Second
Vatican Council concerning the
laity," according to an article
in the Vatican City dally L'Os-
servatore Romano.
The article reported that
plans made so far for the com
ing congress were submitted to
Pope Paul VI. The date for the
congress is yet to be set. It will
depend on the development of the
Second Vatican Council.
THE MATERIAL submitted
to the Pope included study mat
ter drawn up on the theme cho
sen for preparation of the con
gress: "Ut UnumSlnt...UtMun-
dus Credat" (That All May Be
One...That the World May Be
lieve), and on “what helps and
what hinders unity among men,
among Christians, among Ca
tholics."
The article said that the
choice of the preparatory them
was inspired by the ecumenlca
council, its aim being to pre
pare lay people throughout th
world to receive the council*
decisions and to make then
bear fruit in the three sector
defined once again by PopePau
VI in a recent letter to Eugeni
Cardinal Tlsserant, Dean ofthi
Sacred College of Cardinals
as: “greater prosperity in th<
life of the Church," the desln
for the “unity of our separate*
brethren with the Catholic
Church," and “peace and spi
ritual prosperity for manklr
throughout the world."
THE ARTICLE said that s
study of the preparatory theme
is being carried out by national
and diocesan coordinating bod
ies for the lay apostolate ir
many countries. The results oi
this study, as already announ
ced, will be surveyed at a pre
paratory conference for the
world congress. The confer
ence is to be held in Washing
ton, possibly during the coming
year.

Marist Cadets Are
Halted By Osborne
BY ROBERT BROCKMAN
The Osborne Cardinals
marched 71 yards in a race with
the clock to throttle the Mar
ist Cadets, 12-6, Friday night at
Ponce de Leon Park.
Osborne drew first blood on a
53 yard aerial to a back who
had slipped through the Cadet
secondary. The conversion at
tempt was thwarted by the hard-
charging Marist line. Seconds
later the Cadets retaliated with
a 75 yard march climaxed by a
bit of razzle-dazzle between

quarterback Bill Reitmeier and
halfback Rhode Hill . The re
sult was a 29-yard Marist T.D.
Withers’ PTA was unsuccess
ful.
WITH THE awesome defens
es employed by both teams and
the consistently superb kicks
of Marist’s Hill the 6-6 dead
lock remained until late in the
fourth period.
There were seven minutes
left on the scoreboard when Os
borne took possession of the
pigskin on their 29 yard line.
Four minutes later the Cardi
nals were Inside the Cadet 10
yard line. Despite a brilliant
defensive stand on the goal,
Osborne scored on the fourth
down.
THOUGH trailing 12-6 the Ca
dets had not surrendered. A
last second drive moved the ball
some 50 yardsto the Osborne 25
yard line. Here time and the
Cardinal defense halted the
drive, and ended the game. This
defeat gave Coach Don Shea’s
Cadets a 1-3 won-loss chartfor
the young season.
Math Curriculum
Being Evaluated
When the Archdiocesan
Arithmetic Committee met at
Saint Joseph High School re
cently, it was decided to send
out a nationwide questionnaire
to individual teachers asking an
evaluation of the math program
used in the various Catholic
School Systems.
The Committee hopes to ob
tain frank and practical answers
from teachers in the field. Since
very little evaluation has taken
place on the Catholic Element
ary School level with regard to
this controversial subject—
tradional versus modern math-
this questionnaire will help the
Archdiocesan Arithmetic Com
mittee, under the direction of
the Reverend John Leahy, Su
perintendent of Catholic
School, to formulate future
policies for the elementary
schools in this archdiocese.
As soon as results of the
questionnaire are available the
School Office will publish them
in the GEORGIA BULLETIN.
