Itself it Catholic men had not

Miss Belllslllo continued:
"I WANT TO make it clear

CANCER SOCIETY
Council Sponsors
Full Cancer Test
New Arrivals
Mrs, E. P. Faust, president
of the Atlanta Arch Diocese Co
uncil of Catholic Women, anno
unced this week that 13 affilia
ted organizations over the state
have enrolled in the CONQUER
UTERINE CANCER Program
with the American Cancer Soc
iety,
The primary objective of this
program is to get every mem
ber of the Council in Georgia
to have a health checkup and a
"Pap" smear test as thefirat
step toward a lifelong habit of
annual health examinations as a
safeguard against death from
cancer,
THE PROGRAM was endo
rsed at the state meeting of
the Atlanta ACCW earlier thia
fall and recommended to all af
filiated groups,
"The goal of the program is
the eventual control of uterine
cancer," Mrs, Faust said.
The announcement of pro
gress was released following a
planning meeting with Mrs,
Carl E. Sanders, Geor
gia's First Lady and Hon
orary Chairman of the Georgia
Division's Earlier Treatment
Education Program at which the
film TIME AND TWO WOMEN
was previewed by leaders of
women's organizations from
over the state,
"THIS FILM is a key part
of the program," the Council
president explained. "As part
of our activities, each group
that enrolls should arrange to
have its membership view the
film. It stresses the importance
of early detection and treatment
of uterine cancer, pointing out
that It is virtually 100 per cent
curable when detected while lo
calized."
The American Cancer So
ciety explains that since 1963,
the death rate from uterine
cancer has gradually dropped
50 per cent In recent years
and at present stands at 16.8
deaths per 100,000 population in
Georgia,
THIS IS STILL much higher
than the national average for
cancer of this same site, which
is 14,3 per 100,000 population.
The fact that there have been
gains does, however, under
score the value of early detec
tion and prompt treatment as
well worth the extensive educa
tion program! on the protect
ion an annual physical examin
ation and "Pap" smear test,
"Progress of groups in get
ting their members to go for
examinations are to be reported
to the Georgia Division of the
Society, and those having the
highest number of women, in a
goal of 100 per cent, who have
had the "Pap" examination will
receive awards from the Socie
ty," Mrs, Faust explained,
THE "PAP" SMEARtestfor
detection of early uterine can
cer or even conditions that
might lead to cancer, has been
called a major "breakthrough"
in the control of cancer,
"Last year, there were
approximately 1200 new cases
of uterine Cancer in Georgia,
and more than 360 deaths,"
Mrs, Fauat commented, "these
are even more tragic figures
when we realize that if every
Georgia woman would have thla
simple and Inexpensive test an
nually, there need be no dea
th! from this form of cancer,"
