‘RADIO PRIEST’
Father Coughlin Unifies
Parish Men’s Groups
DETROIT (RNS)—Because of
a “multitude of splinter organi
zations" that had developed
over the years, a Roman Catho
lic pastor here has abolished
all male laymen's societies and
reorganized them as one cen
tral group.
Father Charles E. Coughlin,
once a famed and controversial
radio speaker, announced the
move which will become effec
tive Jan. 1 in his parish, the
Shrine of the Little Flower at
Royal Oak, Mich.

Book Week
HAVERFORD, Pa. (NC) --
Archbishop John F. Dearden of
Detroit will serve as honorary
chairman of the 24th annual Ca
tholic Book Week, Feb. 23 to 29,
the Catholic Library Associa
tion announced here.
Theme of the week will be:
“Read and Unite Our Changing
World."
Cosponsoring the week will
be the Catholic Press Associa
tion, National Council of Ca
tholic Men, National Council of
Catholic Women and the Na
tional Office for Decent Lite
rature.
The association will hold its
40th annual convention March 31
to AjjJril 3, 1964, In Detroit.
WRrriNG IN THE church’s
weekly bulletin, Father Cough
lin described his decision as
“an effort on our part and the
rectory not only to rid the
Shrine of a multitude of splin
ter organizations, but to co
ordinate, our efforts toward one
grand, duly elected and respon
sible group of officers."
According to a Spokesman
for the Archdiocesan Council
of Catholic Men, the consolida
tion is unprecedented, “but
the pastor is at liberty to do
what he sees best."
FATHER COUGHLIN’S or
der announced “that all the dis
integrated, individual and spe
cific male organizations now
extant in the parish are here
by suspended."
Among those affected were
the high school fathers* group,
the athletic organization, the
ushers’ society and “every
other male group save the St.
Vincent de Paul Society, which
is apart from all others be
cause it deals with the spiri
tual and corporal works of mer
cy."
THE NEW CENTRAL orga
nization will be known as the
“Shrinemen" and, said Fa
ther Coughlin, will include
“every male, adult person...
(and)...will embody every one
of the former male groups
in the parish."
CONVENTION
Committees formed within
the Shrinemen will carry out the
activities of the abolished orga
nizations. All men in the parish
are automatically members of
the new body and are qualified
to elect a Board of Governors
which will name all commit
tees.

In Catholic Home
DETROIT (RNS) — Protes
tant Episcopal Communion ser
vices are being held here at a
Roman Catholic home for the
aged.
According to the Rev. Thomas
E. Frisby of St. John’s Episco
pal church, monthly services
are held at Carmel Hall for
Episcopalian residents of the
home. Permission was granted,
he said, by Archbishop John V.
Dearden of Detroit, only re
cently named a member of the
Vatican Secretariat for Pro
moting Christian Unity.
“Before I wrote Archbishop
Dearden," said Mr. Frisby, “I
used to take communion to the
rooms separately, but this was
quite a Job to serve commun
ion individually 20 times. And
it’s much nicer to gather toge
ther." The monthly service is
held in a lounge. According to
Mr. Frisby, nuns at Carmel Hail
prepare the linens for an im
provised altar.

Wrong Arm of the Law (Br.)—Continental
‘THERE ARE NO criteria
in the Church against such
marriages, but some states
prohibit them. The right is
yours and the laws against in
terracial marriages are im
moral,” Miss Strltzinger said.
She was principal speaker at
a panel session on ’The Ca
tholic Church and Segregation:
Moral and Social Implications"
(Nov. 15). Social repercuss
ions of integration and the
question of interracial marri
age received the major share
of attention. Three priests
were present at the session.
ONE PANELIST SAID that
although a young adult may
want to associate with Negroes
socially, his parents may frown
on this and he has some ob
ligation to heed their wishes.
Another quickly countered
that if such is the case, the
young adult should not forsake
principles but, if necessary
should live away from his
parents—at least temporari
ly— in the hope that their
attitude will change.
The only Negro among some
40 Catholic young adults parti
cipating in the discussion was
Carolyn Gladden of New York.
Questioned afterward about her
reaction to the discussion, she
said she did not think too much
attention was given to the issue
of interracial marriage.
"I BELIEVE MOST Negroes
would not look on interracial
marriage favorably, but the
question cannot be overlooked,
even if only for the reason
that many persons use it as a
target to discourage integrat
ion by asking, 'Would you want
your daughter or son to marry
a Negro?' ’’
Asked for her reaction to
the panel, she said: ‘These
persons want to go along with
integration, but some are
worried about social re
percussions, what friends and
neighbors will think.
"I FEEL THEY SHOULD
think of what is right in keep
ing with the Church’s code of
brotherly love, and this atti
tude should be shown in daily
living.
"If an individual puts into
practice the moral precepts
of the Church, integration will
be a minute problem," he said.
“But it has to be a two-way
situation. Minority races also
must do their part,"
MISS GLADDEN SAID she
didn't see anything unusual
about being the only Negro at
a discussion on such issues
as interracial marriage and
integrated social functions.
