Come Alive
Insight Into The Liturgy §
by Father Henry C. Gracz * " $
On this Sunday, the third in
Advent, St. Paul tells us in the
first reading at Mass: Present
your needs to God in every form
of prayer and in petitions full of
gratitude.” Often it seems that
we have forgotten Paul’s counsel
to make us of “every form of
prayer”. When we began to
experience the changes in our
style of worship, I think an
understanding of the ways and
forms of prayer would have
helped all of us a great deal. Most
of us were familiar with our
private prayers, but we really had
to struggle to regain a sense of
public prayer, prayer by the
community of people, reaching
toward the Father. Problems
were encountered by those who
were accustomed to using the
time of Sunday Mass or the
Weekday Mass to carry on their
own personal praying. Suddenly
the time that was theirs now had
to be shared by the demands of
responding, singing, and acting
with those who were with them.
The first changes didn’t intend
to replace private prayer, but
really wanted to share with all of
us the concept that “every form
of prayer” has its role in
Christian life, at the right time
and in the right place. Our
obligation to pray privately to
our Father is just as serious a task

as it was for the Apostles, but
each of us also has to cry out to -
God as members of a true
community, part of an assembly
of people who visibly proclaim
their celebration that He is their
God and they are His people.
Our public worship begins to
mean a great deal more to us
when we approach it as another
form of prayer, with a style, an
intent, and even a purpose that
sets it in a unique role. When we
join in celebration of Mass by
fully giving ourselves, then
something truly begins to
happen. When our song is a
prayer, when the responses come
from our hearts, when God’s
word is spoken with clarity and
heard with openess, then a new
reality is experienced by those
who have truly given themselves
in spirit...They become God’s
chosen ones in a special way,
sharing the presence of God.
They celebrate! “Rejoice in the
Lord always, I say it again,
rejoice!”

Papal
Volunteers
Needed
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Inquiries from persons interested
in joining the Papal Volunteers
for Latin America (PAVLA) have
taken a sharp upturn, according
to Father Raymond A. Kevane,
PAVLA national director. But
more are still needed, he added.
During the first month of the
1969 recruitment drive (October
to November, 1968) 523
inquiries were received,
PAVLA’s policy is to accept
men and women experienced in a
skill or profession specifically
requested by Latin American
programs. They agree to spend
three years working in Latin
America after completing
training.
Next year will be ninth that
PAVLA has sent volunteers to
Latin America. The 1969 training
program will begin next summer.
There are now about 200 Papal
Volunteers working throughout
the Central and South America as
well as in the Caribbean.
