New St. Vincent de Paul Shop
BY JOLAINE KINGERY
“Second Hand Rose” is
the name given to Saint
Vincent de Paul’s new store
which opened April 1, at
3660 Clairmont Road in
North DeKalb.
Like other Atlanta
merchants, Saint Vincent’s
has decided to branch into
the suburbs with its third
store to reach more
customers. “A market survey
of the area showed this
location to be ideal. It is one
block north of the Dresden
Drive intersection. It’s easy to
reach and has ample
parking,” reports Barbara
McDonough, Publicity
Chairman for St. Vincent
stores.
The store decor is most
appealing with bright, spring

colors on the walls and
carpets generating a cheerful
atmosphere. Ms. McDonough
testifies to many hours of
volunteer labor used in
producing this. In this near
“boutique” atmosphere,
shopping Will be a pleasure.
Merchandise in the store
includes new and previously
owned clothing for men,
women, and children as well
as household articles and
furniture. The opening day
feature was an April Fool’s
Day Sale, only the prices are
no April’s Fool joke. Prices
are the same everyday low
prices St. Vincent’s is famous
for.
Store hours for “Second -
Hand Rose” are 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. four days a week,
Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Fridays, and Saturdays.
Holy Week in small
communities and large ones is
very special. Maybe it’s a
more special week in small
communities, though. This
week in the Toccohart area is
a lot of running around for
the pastor, but what a week
nevertheless. Monday evening
we were a part of an
ecumenical gathering at First
Methodist Church in
Hartwell, where a young man
gathered people together in
song, slides, prayer, reflection
and celebration of the unity
we profess in Jesus the Lord.
On Tuesday night we sought
forgiveness and reconciliation
as a small community at St.
Mary’s in Toccoa. We did the
same at Sacred Heart in
Hartwell on Wednesday.
Then Thursday' of the
Lord’s Supper. At 6 p.m. in
Toccoa we celebrate the
central mystery of our faith
as Catholic Christians,
wondrously rejoicing that
Jesus is the Bread of Life and
gives us sacramentally
Himself that we might know
He is always with us until He
comes again and transforms
not only bread and wine but
the whole of creation. At 8
p.m. we celebrate again in
Hartwell, aware that the two
communities 35 miles apart
are truly as close as the table
that is common, the altar that
is one.
For the second year, our
gift at this Eucharist is our
Rice Bowl, seeking to wash
the feet of the world in
service of our brothers and
sisters everywhere, for we do
seek to serve the least of His
brothers and sisters - He
demands that from us if we
are to be His disciples.
Good Friday begins
ecumenically in both towns
at 12 noon with the
SERVICE OF THE NAILS.
Each one is given a 30-penny
nail at the beginning of the
service, and through choral
reading and song, we begin to
realize that it is we who
crucify the Christ by our
selfishness today, our
sinfulness today, our failure
to live in His Way, His Truth,
His Life. The nails are
dropped individually into a
steel bucket, and the
churches resound not with
the pound of a hammer, but
the din of falling hails. At the
end of the service each one is
given two nails welded
together in a cross, as a sign
of our failure and God’s
conquering our sin. Friday
night we as Catholic
Christians celebrate the Good
Friday service, in each town,
a little differently, but yet
the same.
And Easter Sunday begins
at 7:30 a.m. in Hartwell, with
the blessing of the fire, the
lighting of the Easter Candle,
the readings, the Alleluias,
the proclamations, the

THE HOLY FATHER’S MISSION AID TO THE ORIENTAL CHURCH
The Sister was moving among the slums of a
city in India. Unbelievably, she heard sobbing
coming from a trash barrel. Brushing aside the
flies and the vermin, she looked. Beneath the
filth and debris was an old lady crying from tear
less eyes as her life slowly ebbed away. Ten
derly the Sister lifted her, placed her on her
shoulders and took her to the Hospice for the
Dying. Before she died, the old lady told the
Sister, "I'm not crying because I was in the
garbage. I'm crying because my son put me
there. He had to. There was not enough food
for the family." . . . Tragically, this scene will be
replayed many more limes. But you can help
to lessen it. Will you? Here is how ...
