NCCB: Mass Studied
An 175-page document
covering every element in
the structure of the Mass
will be developed into a
workbook for national
distribution to facilitate
three-year study of the
Order of Mass. The
document will be
published next spring by
the Federation of
Diocesan Liturgical
Commissions in
cooperation with the
NCCB Committee on the
Liturgy.
The NCCB liturgy
committee initiated the
three-year study of the
structural elements of the
Order of Mass last year in
response to requests from
bishops, priests, and
others. The study pertains
to such matters as the
preferred place for the sign
of peace and the Gloria,
the number of readings,
and the use of the
responsorial psalm. Rather
than considering suggested
changes in piecemeal
fashion, the committee
felt that a careful study
should be made in light of
the 10 years’ experience
since Pope Paul VI
approved the present
Order of Mass in the
apostolic constitution
MISSA ROMANUM in
1969.

secretariat, said the
national study will not
have any immediate effect
on current practice in this
country. The study’s
findings will be presented
to NCCB and to the Holy
See when the work is
completed in 1982.
Father Krosnicki noted
that “while the bishops’
committee initiated the
study and judges that it
will prove to be useful, it
would not want anyone to
entertain unfounded fears
or expectations. Above all,
the study - carefully done
- should assist all in their
understanding and
appreciation of the Mass.

Dance Enhances Prayer
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (NC) - Dance and
other art forms can enhance the beauty of
worship and prayer according to a liturgical
dancer, Carla DeSola, an instructor at a liturgical
workshop held at St. John’s University,
Collegeville.
“Dance, as an art form, contributes to the
beauty of prayer and worship,” she said. “Dance
opens the path to God because we don’t always
have words available to express our true inner
feelings. It opens up what’s happening inside and
captures movements of the spirit hidden beneath
the surface.
Mission Support Increases
NEW YORK (NC) -- Despite rising living costs
and trends toward isolationism in the United
States, American Catholics have increased support
to the missions, according to Archbishop D.
Simon Lourdusamy, secretary of the Vatican’s
Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Pope To Germany
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope John Paul II will
visit seven West German cities on a five-day tour
Nov. 15-19.
The pope was invited by the West German
bishops and civil authorities on the occasion of
the seventh centenary of the death of St. Albert
the Great.
