MARIST MUSICIANS - (1-r) Paul Leavitt, Anne Richardson, and Chuck
Henry.
Marists Make Music
Two Marist seniors, Paul Leavitt and
Chuck Henry, have been selected to
participate in the 1981 Georgia All-State
Jazz Band. The members of this 20
member ensemble are the best high school
jazz musicians in the state. They are chosen
on a district level by audition to participate
in the Jazz workshop at Valdosta State
College. Only 150 students are allowed to
participate. Out of these students 20 are
chosen to members of the All-State Jazz
Band. The ensemble will rehearse during
weekends over the winter and perform for
the Georgia Music Educators convention
on March 28 in Macon.
Another Marist student, ninth-grader
Anne Richardson has been chosen to
participate in the Junior High All-State
Band. Anne is a flautist and competed
against the other flautists in her district for
the chair in the band. The JHA-S Clinic
will also be during the GMEA convention
on March 28 in Macon.
Un Esfuerzo de Parte de Todos
BY SISTER THERESA
AHERN, M.S.B.T.
En la reunion del
Comite Arquidiocesano, el
28 de enero, el Comite
aprobo un programa de
aleance a los refugiados
cubanos quienes han
llegado a Atlanta en los
ultimos meses. Este
esfuerzo empezara el 9 de
febrero en el Hyland
Center de la Catedral de
Cristo Rey a las 7:30 P.M.
El programa consistira
en una orientacion para los
voluntaries y luego un
programa de trabajo en la
comunidad. La orientacion
estara bajo la direccion de
Sister Theresa Ahern.
E v^ngelizacion y sus
metodos y contenido sera
el tema del programa de
cinco semanas, en la
Catedral.
El Comite, en el
momento de dar su
aprobacion a dicho
programa, noto que el
problema mayor se vera en
buscar los voluntaries para
este esfuerzo de
evangelizacion. Es por esta
razon que cada miembro
del Comite hara hincapie
en cada reunion
apostolica, en cada Misa, y
en cada otra oportunidad
de esta necesidad. Se
necesitan voluntaries de
cada parroquia, y de cada
movimiento de la
comunidad hispana
catolica.
Pedimos apoya en

1. APUNTATE como
evangelizador.
2. Promueve este
esfuerzo en cada nivel v
con cada grupo. Un simple
anuncio no sera suficiente.
Sera necesario hablar
directamente con personas
interesadas en ayudar.
3. Habla con los
refugiados a quienes tu
conoces para empezar la
formacion de grupos
pequenos. Estos groupos
pequenos seran el enfoque
de los evangelizadores
despues del programa de
orientacion.

Scout Sunday - February 8
BY FATHER
JOHN C. KIERAN
Scouting continues to
be the world’s largest
youth movement. In this
nation alone, 4 million
boys and 214 million
girls belonged to the Boy
Scouts of America and
the Girl Scouts of
America in 1980.
The single largest
sponsoring body of
Scouting are the
Churches. Topping the
list is the United
Methodist Church,
sponsoring 10,744 Boy
Scout troops across the
country. The Catholic
Church sponsors 10,380
units with a membership
of 287,957 boys.
Sponsors within the
Church include lay
organizations, Catholic
schools and the Knights
of Columbus.
A recent survey
sponsored by the Boy
Scouts of America has
determined the likes of
today’s youth. This
survey revealed that the
method of Scouting still
captivates youth. A
young boy’s desire for
the outdoors and his
natural inclination to
band together with his
peers in the patrol
system is as popular
today as it was when
Scouting began in 1908.
Thus we find that at
many of our parishes,
youth will come out for
Scouting with a
spontaneity which we
would dearly love to see
in all levels of Church
activities.
Bishop Joseph Hart,
Advisor for the National
Catholic Committee on
Scouting, says we should
capitalize on youth’s
enthusiasm for Scouting.
He suggests that a Scout
troop at the parish can
be a way for the parish
to deliver total ministry
to youth.
The parish can take
advantage of the natural
grouping of youth for

These elective

Catholic leaders and

have completed either

This year’s presentations
will be held March 20th
