New Pastoral Ministry Program Set
The Department of Education of the archdiocese will coordi
nate a new formation program to prepare lay persons with
leadership potential for pastoral ministry in the Church.
The Pastoral Ministry Formation Program, a two-year pro
gram, will be held one Saturday a month at the Cathedral of
Christ the King Hyland Center beginning Sept. 8. Its goal is to
prepare lay persons who desire to minister in the Church or are
already doing so with a foundational knowledge and greater
depth in understanding of Church teaching and ministry.
“It is actually a synthesis of two formation programs previ
ously offered in the archdiocese,” commented Robert Melevin,
consultant for pastoral ministry formation and catechist certifica
tion in the archdiocesan Office of Religious Education.
“The new program is a combination of the best offerings of
the former Lay Ministry Training and Professional Ministry
Certification programs with a blend of theology, spirituality, and
ministerial training. It is hoped that this program will deepen the
initial commitment of the participant in ministry through spiritual
and practical formation.”
Classes for the coming academic year will be from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. They will include such topics as Theological Foundations
of Church and Ministry, Foundations of Systematic Theology
and theological Reflection, Spirituality of Ministry, Contempo
rary Approaches to Ministry, Sacramental Theology, Moral
Theology and Leadership Skills for Ministry.
Tuition for the 11 sessions is $150. This does not include
textbooks.
A brochure describing the Pastoral Ministry Formation
Program, as well as applications for the program, is available by
calling the Office of Religious Education at 888-7835.
