First Saturday Devotions Village Gets New Director
Thirty-four churches and
chapels in the archdiocese
and a Knights of Columbus
council now have the Five
First Saturday Devotions in
honor of the Blessed Mother,
under the title of Our Lady of
the Rosary.
Mary appeared six times
between May 13 and Oct. 13,
1917, to three children in a
field called Cova da Iria near
Fatima, Portugal, north of
Lisbon. She recommended
recitation of the rosary; urged
works of mortification for the
conversion of sinners; called
for devotion to herself under
the title of her Immaculate
Heart; asked that the people
of Russia be consecrated to
her under this title; and re
quested the faithful make a
Communion of reparation on
the first Saturday of each
month. The apparitions were
declared worthy of belief in
October, 1930, after a seven-
year canonical investigation.
Devotions in the archdio
cese will be held at the fol

Monks Elect Abbot
BY FATHER MALACHY CORLEY, OCSO
It will be a real homecoming when Dom Bernard Johnson
arrives at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit on July 24 to be
installed the following day as its fifth abbot. On July 12 Father
Bernard was elected by the Abbey’s Conventual Chapter to serve
a six-year term. He succeeds Dom Armand Veilleux who
completed his very fruitful term this month.
Dom Bernard, originally from St. Louis, Mo., entered the
monastery at Conyers in 1946, made his first profession in 1948,
and was ordained a priest in 1954. In 1967 the monks of Vina,
Calif., requested his services as a teacher and the following year
he was elected abbot there. In 1971 he was elected to the Abbot
General’s Permanent Council in Rome. Elected procurator
general in 1977, he has served the Trappist-Cistercian Order in
that capacity until the present.
Returning to the monastery of his monastic profession after an
absence of 23 years, Father Bernard will be welcomed by a
community who remember well his verve and versatility in
leading the Cistercian contemplative life. These qualities plus his
wide-ranging experience will serve him well as he begins, at 65,
to build on the firm foundations laid by his predecessors at the
monastery.
