Extension Family
Reunites For 30th
BY CAROLYN ELLIS
The Extension Lay Volunteer program was the first
national Catholic home missionary program which spon
sored, publicized and financed an apostolate of lay mission
workers. This past June, I attended the 30th anniversary
reunion of Extension Lay Volunteers at Chicago’s Loyola
University.
The reunion was preceded by a letter from Extension
Society president, Monsignor Edward J. Slattery, who
said, “Welcome home!” His letter was appropriate. Along
with former volunteers from around the country, I was
warmly welcomed to my “family reunion” and felt I was
home again.
The gathering was like a meeting of 400 or so close
relatives. There was a tie, the kind soldiers have when
they find someone who served at the same place they did,
even if not at the same time. I had served at St. Anthony’s
Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico, from 1963-64.
For me and other volunteers, the idealism and spirit that
accompanies a 20 or 30-year-old was gone, but a warm
glow of confidence and caring persisted. As in a marriage
of long duration, we were all comfortable with each other
and communicated out of deep love.
The reunion included children, couples, singles and
marrieds who had left spouses at home. Some volunteers,
naturally, had passed away in the span of 30 years. These,
too, were remembered. All were part of our “family.”
The group of lay volunteers from 1963-64 seemed the
largest in attendance. The group of volunteers who, like
myself, had served in the Southwest, felt a special close
ness.
Three priests who had played significant roles in the
early successes of the Extension Lay Volunteer movement
concelebrated a reunion Mass. These priests, Bishop John
J. Sullivan of Kansas City, Archbishop John L. May of St.
Louis and Monsignor Slattery, were active participants at
the reunion.
REUNION - Archbishop John May of St.
Louis and Carolyn Ellis enjoy the 30th reunion of

mer. She is a member of St. Theresa parish in
Douglasville.
“We are in a crisis of spirituality in scripture, liturgy
and prayer,” Bishop Sullivan told the congregation. “We
need to gear up to provide educational formation ... Trust
in the Lord, in his goodness. It is not a human endeavor
but a mystery of Christ.”
Quoting former Atlanta Archbishop Paul Hallinan,
Bishop Sullivan remarked, “The mark of a great adult
leader in the Church must be gratitude and thanksgiving,”
and concluded that “Next to the Eucharist, the most holy
thing in the world is the human person.”
The Extension group of the 1960s, I remember, was
ahead of its time in the area of liturgy. We were saying
and doing then what we are saying and doing today. Sister
Ellen Cavanaugh, a panelist who discussed the role of
laity in the world today, suggested that “(liturgical)
reform has slowed, but the moment we experienced is not
finished.” She encouraged participants to “press the
Church for the best it can do, in love.”
The Extension reunion was among the best 40 hours I
have ever spent. Yes, you can go home for a moment.
Maybe even for 40 hours.

Anglican Leader
Succeeds Runcie
LONDON (CNS) - Anglicanism’s newly appointed
spiritual leader favors furthering ecumenical links with the
Catholic Church and shares with Pope John Paul II a
sense of mission toward the environment but also plans to
lead the Church of England into ordaining women.
The new archbishop of Canterbury, 54-year-old Bishop
George Carey of Bath and Wells, England, is to succeed
Archbishop Robert Runcie early next year as head of the
world’s nearly 70 million Anglicans. The announcement
of his appointment was made July 25 by Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher’s office.
"As the archbishop of Canterbury, I want to be a
pastoral archbishop," Bishop Carey said, "and care for
those people who are going to be hurt, whatever decision
is made."
Bishop Carey said that one of his other priorities will be
the environment.
"My wife and I have lived very simply in whatever job
we have had," he said. "I don’t think that will ever
change."
Bishop Carey is a true "cockney" - bom in London
within the sound of Bow Bells.
He left school at 15 with little in the way of formal
educational qualifications - and told reporters that for two
years afterward he was "unchurched."
But he later in life gained a reputation as a scholar,
earning a doctorate for a study of church order, and was
a lecturer at three Anglican colleges.
His theology is traditional.
