Editorial Comments ....

It seems as though Morris
Brown College, “Haven for
Hungry Souls,” is the scapegoat
among' the Atlanta University
Schools. From all indications it
looks as if this attitude is
spreading to other college cam
puses and also throughout the
black community. Point in case,
the April issue of Ebony featured
an article entitled “How to
Attract a Successful Man.” The
article was very informative for
the young lady interested in
sinking her hooks into a
successful man. One suggestion
for attracting a successful man
says Ebony is on our localcollege
campus and they used the Atlan
ta University Center as an exam
ple. Quoting Ebony Magazine
they say “the girls at Spelman
have their pick of Morehouse,
Clark, and Atlanta University
men, all of whom are noted for
finding the fast track to success.”
What' about Morris Brown
College? I know, maybe they
didn’t know Morris Brown
College was part of the Atlanta
University Complex. No, that’s
not it. Everyone knows that
Morris Brown College is in the
center. Maybe we don’t have
females at Morris Brown College
interested in attracting
successful men. No, that’s not it,
either, everyone knows the
young ladiesatMorrisBrownare
interested in attracting the
successful men, well if that’s the
case then the researchers on the
Ebony staff should review their
records more closely. Rev. Hosea
Williams, State Senator; Alfred
jenkinsof the Atlanta Falcons; Lt.
Edwards L. Dumas, United States
Navy; James McPherson,
Pulitzer Prize Winner; Isaiah
Scapegoat
Larkin, Commissioner of Par
dons and Parole Board of
Baltimore, Maryland; all
graduates of Morris Brown
College. Not enought? How
about Ray Ransom of Brick,
Robert James, President of
Carver State Bank; Dr. Percey
Vaughin, Dean of School of
Business at Alabama State
College; John Middleton
Turner, Jr., Attorney, City of
Atlanta; James Winfield, At
torney in Vicksburg, Miss.;
William Edmonds, performing in
“Showboat” on Broadway; not
to mention Rev. William Chris
tian, Director of Student Ac
tivities, Morris Brown college;
william F. Payne, Vice-President
of Academic Affairs, Morris
Brown College and The Presi
dent, Dr. Robert Threatt all are
successful men in their own right
and all graduates of Morris
Brown College.
Morris Brown College is an
institution dedicated to higher
education and service to
mankind and during its 101 years
of service, she has turned out
some very reputable men and
women whom I think the Ebony
magazine has reandered a severe
blow to the pride of the Student
body, faculty, staff, and also to
the Alumni of Morris Brown
College by omitting our name
from the article whether inten
tionally or unintentionally.
I have responded to the article
by writing a letter to the
publisher of Ebony magazine
expressing my feelings towards
the statement made in the article
and I feel some kind of apology is
in order for the Morris Brown
Family.
Morris Brown College, the
only collegeintheAUC founded
by blacks and funded by blacks
has proven itself very instrumen
tal in the education and cultiva
tion of some very successful
alumni for the past 101 years, and
she will continue to dosoas long
as there are students to attend.
We, the Morris Brown College
family, are proud of the ac
complishments of the successful
alumni of Morris Brown College
and we feel that those same
principles of higher education
for the black community and
service to mankind are
prevalent in the attitude of the
faculty and staff, alumni and the
student body of Morris Brown
College.
What If Elections Were
by Joyce Lee
Well, it’s election time again at
Dear Ole Morris Brown. Time to
chose who will be our student
leaders. We all know that every
student should take an active
part in the election process. We
also know that not many of us
take the time to do so. Then
when all ballots have cast and
results announced, we com
plain.
I’m sure it would be a totally
different situation if they left it
up to the students of the campus
if we were to elect the ad
ministration, faculty, and staff.
Just how many presently
employed persons would keep
their positons?
Would one of these persons
be demoted? Would more than
one?
Imagine one of your instruc
tors serving you breakfast and
asking, “Do you want any grits?”
Or try to picture a certain
administrator as dorm director
trying to find out if you have
enough toilet tissue.
Let’s put one of those nice
guys in plant operations in one of
those nice offices and see if
things change in any way around
here.
Sometimes things have to be
shaken up in order for “some to
see the light’’ as they put it.
I’m sure the students would
turn out in huge numbers if this
were to take place, and things
around here would be placed
back into their proper perspec
tives.
I see a day when all is right and
the world is at rest and the
students and administrators can
talk and be on one accord and
there would be no doubt about
where priorities lie and so what,
sure I’m dreaming, but I’m
allowed to, aren’t I?
Get Out And Vote!
by Hiram, and who is he?
The Business Manager
As we all know, Friday, April 23
is election day for the different
officers of the Student Govern
ment Association as well as class
officers and queens. Elections
will be in the lobby of Cochran
Tower between the hours of 7:00
a.m. and 3:00 p.m. As membrs of
the student - body, it is our
responsibility to elect the can
didates that are best qualified.
How are we going to elect the
candidates that are best qualified
if we don’t vote?
Getting people to the polls to
vote seems to be a nationwide
problem. Most people think
their vote will not make a
difference; the fact is it does.
Some people feel the elections
are competitions and if they
can’t be on the winning side,
they don’t wantto vote. Elections
are not competitions, they are
constructive ways of selecting
the better choice.
Most of us at Morris Brown live
on campus. Getting to the lobby
of Cochran Tower between the
hours of 7 and 3 shouldn't be too
much of a problem since we
must go to the Middleton Com
plex for our three meals a day.
Why not take time out before
or after one of your .meals and
vote?
Off - campus students can vote
between or after classes. There is
no reason why off - campus
students should go without
voting. You are part of the
student body also and should not
feel alienated.
Voting shouldn’t take more
than 5 to 15 minutes. If there is
a long line to vote, come back
later, but make sure you vote.
Why?? Because we can, we must
and we will make a difference.
