Student Personality
Is National Pre-Alumni Council President
This month’s Student Per
sonality is the newly elected
president of The National Pre -
Alumni Council, Brian A. FHart. A
well travelled native of Chester,
Pennsylvania, Brian is a senior
Public Relations major here at
Morris Brown.
When asked why he came to
Morris Brown, Hart cited three
reasons: 1) He wanted to come
south, because he had travelled
extensively, but had never spent
a great deal of time in this region.
2) He thought Atlanta was a
progressive city. 3) He knew
Morris Brown was an A.M.E.
school and he assumed it was
also a spiritual school.
Hart’s short - range career
goals are to finish all of his
education. After he receives his
degree from Brown, he plans to
attend seminary. He also says
that when he leaves Morris
Brown, he hopes to have in
fluenced someone’s life
positively. Not because Brian A.
Hart is so great, but because like
Paul, by the grace of God, he is
what he is. His primary long -
range career goal is “to be a
faithful servant of Christ and an
effective pastor.”
Brian explains the main pur
pose of the Pre - Alumni Council
as giving support to The United
Negro College Fund (UNCF)
through various fundraising
drives. He firmly believes that
now, more than ever, is the time
for the Pre - Alumni Council to
be at its strongest. He stresses
that these days students can not
wait on funds to be given to
them, we have to make the effort
to attain them ourselves.
As the national president of
the Pre - Alumni COUNCILf
Brian represents over 50,000
students. He is their voice to the
UNCF and wherever he goes.
Hart states, “I'm going to enjoy
what I do, I’m not going to let it
be a burden.” He feels that being
elected to this position is a
blessing and is truly humbling
because he represents so many
students, who have so much faith
in him. He admits that God has
been very good to him.
Brian was elected to his
national position on February 14,
1982 in Columbia, S.C. at the
annual national Pre - Alumni
Council convention. When he
left Morris Brown as a delegate,
he had no intention of running
— but he was nominated at the
convention, and accepted the
nomination. He ran against four
people, one of whom was the
incumbent vice president of the
national organization. Hart con
ducted no formal capaign, he
just spoke to people and oc
casionally asked for their sup
port. He thinks the turning point
of his campaign was his speech to
the convention, which was in
terrupted with applause three or
four times. Hart says he had a lot
of faith in God and confidence in
himself. “The*man makes the
office, the office doesn’t make
the man,” comments Hart.
If Brian could be said to have
had an election committee,Greg
Hicks could be said to be the
head of it. Other members of the
committee were Gayle Johnson
— Miss UNCF of Morris Brown
College and Miss SammieBrown
from St. Augustine’s College.
Brian says that all during the
conference he wore his “I Love
Morris Brown College” button
because he was proud of his
college and he does love Morris
Brown, despite its problems.
Because of the eloquent
speech Brian gave at the Colum
bia convention, he was asked to
speak at the 38th Annual UNCF
Banquet held in New York City
— which was attended by Vice
President of The United States of
America, George Bush.
Brian is also the president of
the Morris Brown College
chapter of The Pre - Alumni
Council. Hethinks hecould have
done better, but says he will
advise the next president. The
vice president of the local
chapter is Greg Hicks, who is also
Special Assistant to the President
( of the National Pre - Alumni
council). The national vice presi
dent of the Pre - Alumni council
is Clark College student, Sam
DeShazior. Mrs. Eioise Burwell,
who is the local advisor to the
Morris Brown College chapter of
Fhe Pre - Alumni Council, was
appointed to the office of
National Advisor to the Pre -
Alumni council by Hart.
Hart will serve a one - year
term as the national president of
The Pre - Alumni Council.
The local Pre - AlumniCouncil
meets every Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
in the Administration Building
lobby.
In closing, Brian offered
Morris Brown students three
pieces of advice:
1) If somebody doesn’t like
