EXHIBITIONS
Ted Gordon
Now thru May 29, 1999
This exhibition will be comprised of
approximately 40 works from the local
collections of Charles Locke and Carl
Mullis, as well as our own permanent
collection. Known for his compulsive
style and singular theme of the human
face in infinite variety,
Gordon began drawing in 1954, creat
ing compulsive “doodles” or fine
drawings which were mostly carica
tures of the human visage and figure.
Later works include images of styl
ized cats, birds, fish, flowers, manda-
las, and designs. Gordon draws his in
tricate and vividly colored fine draw
ings with felt markers, colored pencils,
and pens on pieces of cardboard, fab
ric, backs of posters, and paper. He
considers all of his images to be varied
self-portraits. Gordon’s work has been
exhibited on both coasts and is in both
European and American collections,
including the Collection Annexe at the
Brut Art Museum in Lausanne Swit
zerland, the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of American Art, and the Mu
seum of American Folk Art. Gordon
currently resides in Laguna Hills,
California.
