DECEMBER, 19 74 THE HEXAGON PAGE FIVE Blue Devil Football Banquet Held The annual Elbert County High School Blue Devil football banquet was held Dec. 9 at Camp Harmony with former Clemson Uni versity Coach and Athletic Director Prank Howard, center, as the featured speaker. Jackets arid awards were presented to mem bers of the team and the cheerleaders. Sing led out for special recognition were (1 to r) Donnie Coho, winner of the L. O. Picdrillo Memorial Scholarship award; Brian Lunsford, winner of the Sportsmanship Trophy; Jack Watts, co-winner of the Most Valuable line man award; Coach Howard; ECHS Head Coach Billy doer, who was master of cere monies; John Strong, co-winner of the Most Valuable lineman award; James Tate, win ner of the Most Valuable Back and the “Mr. Football” awards. Gifts and gift certificates were presented to members of the coaching staff. Approximately 250 players, cheerlead ers, parents and friends attended the ban quet. Fami lies, friends, cheerleaders, coaches, and players made up the 250 people attending. A roast beef dinner was prepared and served by Beefy Eaves. The invocation was offered by Mr. Paul Abernathy, principal at ECUS. Following the meal was the recognition of guests and coaches by. Coach Cloer. Mrs. Carol Goddard, cheerleader sponsor, then presented the cheerleaders with tokens of ap preciation for their perform ance during the season. Next was the presentation of jack ets, trophies, and plaques to the players and managers. All senior players received their jackets and a plaque, com mending them for a well done GRANITE CITY BANK “PIONEERING IN SERVICE SINCE 1928” MEMBER F D I C job. Other players and man agers received their jackets which sported a new EC letter, a Devil oni the right sleeve and the player’s number on the left. Coach Cloer then pre sented the Most Valuable Back and “Mr. Football” trophies to James Tate. Coach Glen Hen drix presented the Most Valu able Lineman award to co-win ners Jack Watts and John Strong. Mickey Palmer of WiSGO presented to Brian Lunsford the Sportsmanship award. Next Eddie F'endley presented the L. C. Piccirillo Memorial Scholarship award to Donnie Cbbo. Guest speaker for the ban quet was Frank Howard, form er coach and athletic director at Clemson University,' who was introduced by Mr. Frank Griffith, once a. player under Howard. Coach Howard spoke- humorously of his experience playing college football at Ala bama and coaching at Clemson. He stressed to every member of the team that, “If you want, something badly enough you can get it. Never start with a negative attitude.” An evening enjoyed by all was closed by Mr. Bob Willi ford, as he presened gifts to Coaches Cloer, Hendrix, Dunn, and Roberts and then adjourn ed the banquet with a prayer. merry happy for him There was 1 only one question on the exam, but the student couldn’t answer it. So he sub mitted h|is paper with these words instead of an answer; Who knows? Merry Christmas. Elbert Rips Hartwell In Dec. 10 Rival Matches BY RITA BROWN The Devils and Devilettes upped their record December 10 by utterly destroying Hart County in very exciting games. In the girls game, high scor er was Patricia Griffith with 11 points. T’ammie Melton and Pam Bryant both popped in 8 points apiece. Two steals by Gwen Tate late in the game helped to preserve the victory. The game was really pressure- packed but the Devilettes struggled to come out on top as the final score was 36-33. Ronnie Hood was top scorer in the boys game as he juggled What Happened BY TRACEY EDWARDS Christmas has been fully commercialized! Special paper, cards and decorations have been designed to make money, mon ey, and more money. The ulti mate thing is the artificial Christmas tree. They have white ones, silver ones, and even red ones. Whatever happened to a real Christmas tree and home made popcorn and cranberry streamers? People give and receive pres ents. Children make mile long lists about what they want from Santa Claus. Shoppers find themselves in the “Christmas Rush”. Does anybody remem ber the true meaning of Christ-, mas? Basically all the real reasons of Christmas have disappeared. Recently something happened in 28 points. Mike Moon and Anthony Gary both helped the team with 16 points, each. Three crucial baskets by Greg Fortson helped to give the Devils the beat that carried them to victory. Marvin: Denny came off of the bench to play a good defensive game. He also gave the Devils some cool floor leadership. After being pounded by a score of 81-75 1 , Hart County retreated to the dog pound. Sophomore Roosevelt ‘ Tur man racked up 31 points to pace the victory for the B- Team hoys. to me to make me realize this. I was talking to a young child the other day. I questioned the child about why he thought we had Chrismas. He replied quick ly, “You mean you don’t know? We have Christmas so all the good little kids like me can, get lots and lots of presents.” When I told him the story about Jesus, he replied, “Nobody ever told ine that before”.
