Why Me, Coach?
Baseball Feature
BY DAVID HULME
Bottom of the ninth and your
team trails by a run. There
you sit on the bench, “Super
Sub”. Never started a game in
your life. Oh, you’ve played in
the games where your team
leads by ten runs but never
in a big one. The first batter
steps up to the plate. You
move to the edge of the bench
to watch the action. The pitch
er winds and pitches. The batter
swings and sends a ground ball
to third. The third baseman
flips it to first for the first out.
Now the number two man
steps into the box. Your dug-
out seems a little more tense.
The batter takes a couple of
pitches for balls. , On the third
pitch he sends a fly ball to deep
left field, but camped under it
is the left fielder. Two gone.
It’s all up to the next batter.
“Wait a minute. That couldn’t
have been my name the coach
called. He wants me to bat?
But why now? What if I strike
out?”
Your whole body is trem
bling. You don’t even notice
when you pick up the bat, put
on the helmet, and slowly trot
to the plate.
“Why me, of all people?” you
say to yourself and you get in
to the box.
The pitcher is ready. The
first pitch to you is a ball. You
sigh with relief. Here comes
the next pitch. You swinig with
all your might. There’s noth
ing there to meet the bat but
air. “Oh no!” you say inside,
“Get me out of here.”
You position yourself for the
next pitch. Here it comet. You
swing and feel the bat connect.
