Community Crisis Center
ATLANTA BARB-Page 9
The Community Crisis
Center is an incorporated,
non-profit, self-governing,,
social - service agency pro -
viding free and confidential
counseling, medical, and
other services both to the
10th Street Community and
to the entire metropolitan
Atlanta area.
The Center is presently
funded by a grant from the
Drug Abuse Services Sec
tion of the Division of Men
tal Health of the Georgia
Department of Human Re
sources. A six-month con-
tract was awarded last July,
and a renewal for another
six months has recently
been received.
The staff is composed of
nine full-time para-profes
sionals, a part-time street
counselor, several work-
study students, and a corps
of volunteers. The salaried
staff are chosen by a majo
rity vote of the existing
paid members, usually from
those volunteers who have
proven themselves to be val
uable and dedicated in their
work with the Center.
The services of the Cen
ter are divided into four
major areas: Hotline, Medi-
chl Clinic, Counseling Ser
vice, and Walk-In-Outreach.
* ‘Hotline Atlanta” is a
crisis - intervention phone
service immediately avai
lable to all the million-
and-half residents of the me
tropolitan area. It’s operat
ed 24-hours a day, seven
days a week, and can handle
almost any human problem
with confidential counseling
and/or referral to appro
priate agencies. The Hot
line is averaging between
1,500 and 2,000 calls per
month. The Center has al
so begun operation of a
state-wide VD Watts Line.
The Free Medical Clinic,
staffed by volunteer doc
tors and nurses, is held
three nights each week. A
General Clinic is held on
Monday and Thursday nights
at 7:00 p.m., and treats most
common ailments, including
VD. A Women’s Clinic is
held on Tuesday nights at
6:30 pm for pregnancy-test
ing, birth-control, and gyne
cological problems. Preg
nancy counseling and refer
ral to abortion clinics are
also available at this time.
Drags In Retirement
The Counseling Service
is just getting underway.
It’s purpose is to provide
more in-depth and longer-
term individual counseling
than can be offered over the
Hotline or through crisis-
intervention walk-in- coun
seling. Sessions are handled
on an appointment basis with
the counselors who volun
teer for this service. In ad
dition, the Center runs two
growth groups, on Wednes
day at 7:30 pm, and Thurs
day at 8:00 pm.
The W a 1 k- In- - Outreach
Service is aimed primarily
at helping the residents of
the 10th Street Community.
People can come into the
Center from noon to mid
night every day, and after
hours emergencies, for cri
sis counseling, referral, or
anything else the staff can
provide. The Center has al
so recently opened a Free
Store for clothing and can
ned and packaged food.
In addition to these main
areas, the Center is involv
ed in a number of other ac
tivities. Staff members do
drug-education work in the
Atlanta-area public schools
through MACAD ana the
YMCA, and are available
for speaking on such topics
as crisis? counseling and
family-planning. The Center
is presently working on the
development of a drug-ana
lysis program for the city.
