mitted to Mr. David A. Brown, na
tional chairman, making a total of
about $11,000 raised in North Caro

Fund.
Simon J. Levin, Executive Director
of the Seaboard Zionist Region, who
made a special trip to attend the
gathering, addressed the conference.
Among other leaders who were pres
ent and who addressed the conference
were: Rabbi H. Goodkowitz, High
Point; Rabbi 1. Printz, Raleigh; Rab
bi Isre L. Freund, Goldsboro; Rabbi
Milton Ellis, Greensboro; Mr. M. E.
Block, State chairman of the North
Carolina United Jewish Campaign;
Mr. Herbert S. Falk, Greensboro, sec
retary of the North Carolina State
United Palestine Appeal Committee.
The committee on resolutions head
ed by Rabbi Iser L. Freund of Golds
boro introduced the following resolu
tions on the present Palestine situa
tion which were unanimously adopted:
1. The hearts of the Jewish popu
lation of North Carolina have been
torn by reports of hostilities against
our people costing a heavy toll in hu
man life and property in Palestine,
which was designated by the British
government as a homeland for world
Jewry at the termination of the World
War.
2. We are calling upon our people
throughout the state to give to the
fullest extent of their ability to re
lieve the distress that has followed in
the wake of the incident at the Wail
ing Wall. Already most of our co
religionists in North Carolina have
responded to the need of the hour and
substantial contributions have been
sent to the New York headquarters
by both larger and smaller communi
ties.
3. We are urging that the Zionist
Organization make overtures with the
British government, requesting that it
take steps necessary to safeguard our
people who have marshalled their re
sources and have been sending colo
nists to the Holy Land in all good
faith l>ecause of the assurance that
the Balfour declaration gave them
that the great British Empire stood
behind their attempt at repatriation,
to the end that the dreams and hopes
cherished by our people throughout
the ages that there be established on
the sacred soil of our ancestors a
commonwealth exemplifying the ideals
of justice and righteousness preached
by our prophets and seers be brought
to realization.
RUSSIAN JEWISH SCULPTOR
VICTIM ANTI-SEMITIC
PERSECUTIONS
Moscow (J. T. A.)—The Russian
Jewish sculptor, Strazh, famous for
his statues of Socialist and Bolshevik
leaders was the victim over a number
of years of persecutions at the hands
of his neighbors, because he is a Jew.
Strazh suffered the torments in si
lence until his friend brought the facts
to light in the Moscow press. The au
thorities have taken action against the
neighbors, it was stated, and Strazh
was given another place to live where
he might continue his work undis
turbed.

PALESTINE PIONEER MOVEMENT
IN RUSSIA TO ABANDON POLIT
ICAL CHARACTER LEFT WING
DECIDES
Will Participate in Jewish Agency
Charkoff (J. T. A.)—The work of
the Palestine pioneer movement in So
viet Russia shall, in the future, not
have a political character, according
to a decision adopted by the Left Cha-
lutz at a conference just concluded
here. The Left wing of the pioneer
movement decided to unite with the
Right wing in Soviet Russia.
The present Palestine situation and
the Jewish Agency were the center of
discussion at the conference, which
adopted a resolution declaring: “Al
though the Jewish Agency is the in
stitution of the great bourgeoisie,
nevertheless, it is desirable to partici
pate in it. It is, however, necessary to
adopt means to insure the position
of the working men and collectiviza
tion methods in the colonization of
Palestine.”
