their meetings, Acting Welfare
Commissioner Stanley H. Howe
has refused to grant a license

him to grant a license. He also
disclosed that he had received
three letters threatening his life,
and others from German-Ameri
can groups charging that the
Committee or the Nazi groups sup
porting it are engaged in racket
eering. Commissioner Howe de
clared that the reports of hLs ag

Committee’s meetings, convinced
him that they are un-American
and anti-Semitic, and that If the
license were issued “the door
would be open to racketeers.” The
police are investigating the threat

propaganda in the United ’States
and a declaration that he abhors

ing spread that he ls an anti- Se
mite. In a .letter to the editor of
the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, who
called his attention to these whis
perings, Mr. Ripley said: “In re
gard to the malicious rumor that
some anonymous person is spread
ing about — that I am connected
with Nazi propaganda—I would like
to state emphatically that it is ab
solutely untrue. I am glad of this
opportunity that you afford me to
say that I am neither interested In
nor sympathetic with any Nazi
movement, or any form of anti-
American propaganda. I abhor ev
ery form of bigotry and intoler
ance.” The charges against Ripley
are contained in a circular letter
broadcast by an anonymous group
calling itself “Individual Anti-Nazi
Drive”. This letter asserts that
Ripley became actively connected
with Nazi propagandists after his
return from abroad and his confer
ence with Hitler in Coblenz for the
Saar rally on August 27, 1934. The
charge is also made that Ripley-
opened pro-Nazi propaganda head
quarters at his own expense in
Mamaroneck, New York.
Paris (WNS)—While anti-Semi

Students issued a statement repu

and announcing'that it favors al
