The Lost Generation
By RABBI MORRIS B. CHAPMAN
SPIRITUAL LEADER

St. Petersburg, Fla.
Rosh Hashonah affords
each of us a precious oppor
tunity to assess our life and
to gauge the measure of our
loyalty to Judaism.
Unfortunately, many of us
do not measure up to the
high standards required and
we justify our limitations by
referring to ourselves as
members of “the lost genera
tion.”
Are we being honest with
ourselves? It is my feeling
that we are somewhat less
than candid. Being lost im
plies having a destination,
and it is only when one can
not arrive at his destination
that he is lost. Otherwise,
without a destination, one is
not lost; he is simply moving
about aimlessly.
This truth was borne home
tq me a few years ago when
looking at a cartoon showing
a little boy, during the Christ
mas season, gazing open-eyed
at all the toys, with a mother
ly type woman hovering soli
citously over him and asking:
“Little boy, are you lost?”;
and he replies: “How can I be
lost when I don’t care where
I am going!”
The truth is that the appeal
tq the “lost generation" is a
cRshonest one because, by and
large, these are not members
qf the “lost generation” but
these are people who are real
ly indifferent and careless. If
they were really members of
the “lost generation, they
\yould be crowding the syna
gogues and the Jewish school-
roqjns trying to discover the
meaning of Jewish life and
how to live the Jewish life.
r Instead, most of our “lost
generation” go about their

careless, indifferent ways.
What we really need is a
“lost generation” of men and
women who are seeking,
questing, and groping for the
answers to Jewish life. With a
corps of such men and wom
en, there would be a verita
ble revolution in Jewish life
and Jews would be finding
their way home.
I wish you and your dear
ones a very Happy New Year.
I pray that this will be a year
of return to Jewish life and
Jewish values, so that this
coming Rosh Hashonah will
be a year of self-fulfillment
and the realization of our
fopdest hopes.
