Education Bureau To Expand
Teacher Training Program
A Salute to the New Year of School
‘‘In a major effort to overcame
the critical shortage of qualified
teachers for Jewish schools in
the dty, the Atlanta Bureau of
Jewish Education has embarked
on an intensive, year-round
teaoher training program,” it was
announced by Hans Erman, exe
cutive director of the Bureau.
Mr. Erman pointed out that the
program was devised by the Edu
cators Council of Atlanta which
consists of the heads of all local
Jewish schools who will also
serve as instructors in the pro
gram.
On one hand the course is des
igned to acquaint Israelis, who
are frequently hired as Hebrew
teachers, with the psychology of
the American Jewish child, with
the philosophy of American edu
cation, and with the communal
end denominational structure of
American Judaism.
On the other hand, it will af
ford a general introduction to the
techniques of class room teach
ing which will be beneficial for
most Sunday school teachers who
did not complete an ordinary
teaoher training program.
Specifically, the course curri
culum will include topics such as
what makes a good Jewish teach
er; the learning process; motiva
tion, the crucial ingredient; the
teaching of Bible, of values, of
prayers, of Jewish History, and
of Jewish observances and; prac
tices; training for habits, skills,
attitudes and character: arts and
crafts and music in the Jewish
school; construction and admin
istration of tests; classroom man
agement; preventive and correc
tive discipline; the teaching of
the Hebrew language.
In addition to a thorough dis
cussion of all these aspects of
Jewish education, participants in
the course will be given an oppor
tunity to visit classes in session,
to observe experienced teachers,
and finally to engage in super
vised practice teaching.
Eligible for admission to this
course are high school gradu
ates and individuals recommend
ed by a member of the Educators
Council. Upon successful com
pletion, participants will receive
a diploma.
Further information about the
course may be obtained by call
ing the Bureau office at 525-4825.
