RICHARD DREYFUSS, the
bearded oceanographer of the
movie “Jaws,” a rugged, robust
character, now appears on the
stage in Beverly Hills as Arthur
Brooks, the supereensitive, ner
vous young man who, against
his will, enlists in the rite of ex
orcism and himself is released
from the burden of an alien
spirit in the revival of Paddy
Chsyefsky’s “The Tenth Man.”
We talked with Richard
between rehearsals. The stage is
nothing new to him! We have
known him since he appeared at
the age of 16 at the Hollywood
Gallery Theater. A native of
Brooklyn, he came to the West
Coast as a child making his
debut with the Westside Jewish
Community Center at the age of
nine.
While now appearing nightly
on stage, Dreyfusa during the
daytime is before the cameras in
Warner Bros. ‘The Goodbye
Girl.” The film provides a new-
clean-shaven-look at Dreyfusa in
his initial appearance in a
romantic role. The comedy, a
screen original by Neil Simon,
presents Dreyfusa aa a fast-
talking, self-assured young actor
who restores the faith of an un
lucky stage dancer (Marsha
Maaon — the current Mrs.
Simon) in herself and her career.
The film unites author Simon,
producer Ray Stark and director
Herbert Rosa who, two years ago
collaborated in the comedy “The
Sunshine Boys,” winner of many
Academy Awards. Earlier still,
Simon received an Academy
Award nomination for the
screen adaptation of his
Broadway hit, “The Odd
Couple.” The most successful
American playwright of his
time, he has such plays to his
credit as “Barefoot fit the Park,”
“Plaza Suite,” The Prisoner of
Second Avenue,” and most
recently “California Suite ” Mov
ing to the West Coast, Simon
wrote one of last year’s most
successful films, the star-
studded “Murder by Death.”
Dreyfusa told me that upon
completion of “The Goodbye
Girl,” he turns producer with
The Big Fix,” a detective story
for Universal in which he also
portrays the central character.

WALTER BERNSTEIN and
Martin Ritt are listed among the
participants in “Hollywood on
Trial,” the Academy-nominated
feature length documentary.
They are among the few writers
and directors from the J. Parnell
Thomas era working again to
day. The revealing cavalcade of
events narrated by John Huston
goes to the roots of the
Hollywood investigation and
of those accused discussing the
period in retrospect.
Dalton Trumbo, one of the
moat eloquent defenders of
human rights, the first one to
make a comeback, died shortly
after he made an appearance in
the film. Others who were ac
cused are shown at the hearing
and today, such as Alvah Bessie,
Lester Cole, Howard DaSilva,
Millard Lampell, Ring Lardner,
Jr., Albert Maltz, Zero Mostel,
and Gale Sondergard.
There were also the late
Herbert Biberman; Edward
Dmytryk who recanted; the late
Larry Parks who eventually
broke down — and others on the
fence such as Leon Townsend.
The other side is well
represented by Gary Cooper,
Walt Disney, J. Edgar Hoover,
Louis B. Mayer, Robert Taylor
and Sam Wood teaching us their
brand of Americanism.
And there were the extreme
defenders of the committee,
such as Ronald Reagan, Lela
Rogers, counsel Robert Stripl
ing, with Richard Nixon looming
in the background. In all, 39
forward to our time with some real-life participants.
