Stn&leScene
by Faith Powell
Too much emphasis is put on the
word “singles." It scares many
people away from some very nice
things. Visions of matchmakers
and dating services dance before
their eyes. Tell someone you are
thinking about going away on
a singles weekend and they may
giggle, yawn or ask you if your
social life is that bad. To dispel all
rumors about singles functions
being a cover-up for organized
spouse-hunting, this week we have a
report from Phyllis Wapnick,
recently returned from two weeks
in Israel. She went on a singles tour
Flying solo
and stayed single to tell about it.

Singles tour a success
by Phyllis Wapnick
I This summer I took a two-week
^■trip to Israel, a vacation of living,
• .learning and loving. 1 signed up for
the tour without knowing the
jfeople I would be travelling with,
but, because of our common
interests and the magic of sharing
fife Israel, we planted the seeds of
K friendship that are growing now,
t l even after the trip’s end.
I look forward to the trip so
f much that I felt very little anxiety
I about the people 1 would be with. 1
■ imagined there would be enough
M people on the trip that I would
J.. surely be compatible with at least
! three pr fb'ur.
As it turned out the trip
consisted of 20 people, 12 women
and eight men. We got to know
each other so fast that after the first
few days I felt as if I'd known them
all my life. Sharing Israel brought
us together in a special wav and the
feelings among us grew and grew
There were two or three couples
that paired off from the very
beginning but for the most part, we
did things in groups There was no
pressure about pairing off. Even
though we were people that lead
different lives, in different places,
with different careers, 1 found
myself constantly mixing and
mingling That was the wonderful
thing.
Besides the wonderful
opportunity to know, enjoy and
grow with other Jewish singles (all
northerners but me!), the most
touching aspect of my trip was the
strong Jewish identity that arose in
me throughout each day there. It
was incredible. I couldn't take
enough in...whether it was riding
in the Negev among Nomad tents
and camels, singing Hebrew songs
on the bus, praying at the Western
Wall, or attending an Oneg
Shabbat in Jerusalem.
Our journey began with the
metropolis of stores, restaurants,
hotels and beaches of Tel Aviv. We
also visited Old Jaffa, on the
outskirts of Tel Aviv, for shopping
in the markets, nightclubbing, and
touring some ruins. Educationally,
my favorite spot was Beth
Hatefutsot, the museum of the
Diaspora. The museum represents
the story of the survival of Jews in
all lands for the 2,500 years
preceding Israel's statehood.
We spent one night in Haifa, a
pretty city set in the hills. Our
group saw the diamond warehouse
where stones from all over the
world are cut, polished, and
processed for sales.
Safed or “Tzfat” was quaint with
its artistic goods abounding in the
streets. Would you believe that in
the “old part" of Safed, Yiddish is
still the main language spoken?
The days we travelled from city
to city were beneficial to me in
understanding my relationship
with Israel*” which had seemed so
abstract my first 26 years of life.
Our last stop was the highlight
of my trip—the ultimate
experience — five days in
Jerusalem. The energy I felt there
was incredible; 1 wanted to make
every minute count. Yad Vashem
(memorial to the Holocaust
victims), the Western Wall, the
Dome of the Rock, Hadassah
Hospital, the Knesset—all these
places brought new feelings of
identity and emotions to the
surface. I felt warmth, security and
safety with my new friends.
I brought home a little of Israel
home with me—84 pictures,
souvenirs and many memories
I’ll definitely keep in touch with all
the friends I made...especially one
young man. It’s funny, but I had to
go Israel to met meet a man from
the United States.
