The AJCC and Jewish Survival
A most significant meeting took place last weekend in
Miami. Over 250 top community leaders from 90 cities
came together under the auspices of the Jewish Welfare
Board to examine critically the role and the responsibili
ties of the Jewish Community Center movement in saving
Jewish souls.
The frightening drift of Jews toward assimilation and
intermarriage has shaken this leadership into the realiza
tion that without the marshalling of our best efforts that
the American Jewish community faced a bleak future.
They passionately prodded Centers into stepping up their
emphasis on Jewish programming. Many Centers already
do a great deal—everyone was urged to do more.
The Jewish Community Center movement has more
members nationally than any other institution. People
seem to affiliate with Centers for dozens of reasons, many
of them recreation. The Center is viewed as a non-threat
ening environment allowing Jews to do their things with
other Jews without being forced to make further commit
ments. These leaders urged the Centers to use their wide-
based acceptability to promote opportunities for Jews to
not only enjoy their contacts with fellow Jews, but also
enjoy their contacts with their Jewish heritage.
For many Jews participating in a festival, a camp,
nursery school at the JCC, this may be their only Jewish
activity. We were told to increase the number of these
opportunities, to reach out to a wider population and to
make our programming more creative and exciting.
There was a sense of mission at this Miami weekend,
and the Atlanta participants came back with renewed
energy to tackle the difficult task of finding meaningful
Jewish experiences for secular Jews in the 1980s. Our
AJCC is currently preoccupied with Israel EXPO ’85,
which in itself is a dynamic Jewish experience. Once
EXPO is over, our board and staff will look ahead to
other avenues for enriching the Jewish life of our
community.
Children's Painting Competition
The 12th Maccabiah Games, which started in 1932,
will take place in Israel this July. Most of us will be
unable to attend the festivities; however, all youngsters,
ages 6-18 may participate. The Children’s Painting Com
petition invites all interested boys and girls to submit
individual or group paintings, in any medium. All paint
ings must be signed by the artist and be no smaller than 35
x 50 cm. and no larger than 70 x 100 cms. For more
information, call Chana Shapiro or Esther Low at
875-7881.
All entries must be received in Israel by April 15.
Jewish Brownie Troop
The AJCC has always housed a number of Jewish
scouts. We are especially proud of Brownie Troop 1054,
led by our inimitable Molly McQueen. This troop, which
has been meeting for two years, has already distinguished
itself city wide by its creative programming and outreach
to other Brownies in the city.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, call Sarah Duerr at

Calling all Dads!
If your child is 4-10 years old, and if you and your
child like the idea of programming your own monthly
social activities with a group of kindred spirits, then “Dad
and I” is definitely for you.
Here, fathers meet other men who love spending time
with their children, under the umbrella of the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center’s Department of Children’s
Programming.
