JWV chief to attend Atlanta convention
Harvey S. Friedman, national
commander of the Jewish War
Veterans of the USA, will be in
Atlanta when the organization
meets for its annual convention
during the July Fourth weekend.
Friedman will be guest speaker
at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue
at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at
which time the JWV will be
honored. He will also install offi
cers for the coming year at a lunch
eon culminating the weekend activ
ities. The luncheon will take place
at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Club
112.
Elected national commander at
the organization’s National Con
vention on Aug. 25, 1985, Fried
man will serve in that capacity for
one year. The national commander
serves as a spokesman for the or
ganization and represents the JWV
here and abroad. Friedman recently
stated that “the Jewish War Veter
ans of the USA, which is the old
est active veterans’ organization in
the nation, does important work in
furthering the cause of all veterans,
as well as combating anti-Semitism
and other forms of racism and big
otry. There are many challenges in
both areas, but 1 am prepared to
meet those challenges in the days
and weeks ahead.”
Friedman, who served in the
Navy during the Korean War. has
been a member of the JWV for the
past 25 years. He served three
terms as the chairman of the Na
tional Action Committee, where
he spearheaded JWV’s campaigns
to combat racism and anti-Semi
tism. He has been a member of the
national executive committee, the
national policy committee and the
board of directors of the JWV-
USA National Memorial.
Harvey Friedman
He has three times been elected
the JWV Man of the Year, by three
different echelons. In 1962, he was
so honored by the Elin-lnger Post

and in 1976, by the Essex County
Council. In 1984 he received the
prestigious Moe Lazarus and Louis
Saiewitz Memorial Award, pres
ented by the Bayonne Post #18.
He is a life member of the DAY
and a member of the American
Legion, and for the past three years
he has served as executive secre
tary of the Allied Council of New
Jersey Veterans’ Organizations. The
council is recognized by each of the
legislative bodies within the state
of New Jersey as an advocate for
veterans and their families. He has
also served on the Governor’s Task
Force to help Vietnam veterans
adjust to civilian life.
Friedman attended Seton Hall
University, where he majored in
business administration. For the
past 16 years he has been a sales
manager for the Teleautograph/
Omnifax Corporation, a worldwide
distributor of omnifax equipment.
A native of Newark, N.J., Fried
man lives in Oakhurst, N.J. with
his wife, Sandi, and their sons,
Steven, Michael and Brian.
