JFS ‘pals’ celebrate Hanuka;
parent children helped

have to contend with a myriad of
problems raising their children
alone. Poor communication often
marks the relationship between
single parent and child, accord
ing to experts, who say a child’s
development is often hindered by
the absence of an adult male or
female role model in their life.
Jewish Family Services (JFS)
has just completed a year-long
pilot project, called the PAL
Project, that takes children age
six to 16, who are from single
parent households, and matches
them with a substitute Jew ish big
sister or big brother. According
to Ellen Moore, coordinator of
the program, there is a tremen
dous need for such a program in
Atlanta.
“We are finding in Jewish
Family Services that the number
of single-parent families is grow
ing at a very, very fast rate in the
Jewish community, just as it is in
the larger community,” said Ms.
Moore. “These families’ needs
are excessive.”
There are currently 19 young
people matched with older pals.
party.
“If I had the funds, I’d have more
adult volunteers and more chil
dren." Moore said. “We have
applied to the Atlanta Jew ish Fed
eration. They have turned us down.
W'e are hoping to appeal that."
The PAL Program’s success
ful pilot year is moving to a close
and “we are out of money,” ac
cording to Moore, w ho explained
that the initial funding for the
program was provided by Atlan
tan Archie Solomon.
“He just felt that it helped him
tremendously in his personal
development when he participated
in a similar program in Ohio,”
she said. “Archie gave us seed
money and found other friends
to help support us throughout
our first year.”
The adults who volunteer to be
pals with youngsters are mostly
men and women in their 30s.
Several are older. Usually they
meet with their younger pal once
a week, going to the movies,
engaging in sports, eating out
and the like. Often, according to
one 16-year-old in the PAL Pro
gram, he and his older pal “just
watch television and talk about
things.”
PAL Program participants got
together Dec. 14 at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center for a
Hanuka Party, sponsored by the
Achim Lodge of B’nai B’rith.
“I wanted to increase these
kids’ Jewish awareness,” said
lodge member Michael Hessing,
w ho coordinated and conceived
the idea for an Achim Lodge
PAl. Hanuka Party. “A lot of
young Jews have lost the sense of
identity with Jewish culture and
religion.”
Hessing, 33, got his friend.
Scott Rosenthal, to videotape
the Hanuka Party. For several
hours, Rosenthal scurried about,
candidly taping the group sing-
