Messing, who works for Cable
News Network, said “Having a
TV background. I'm going to
love editing this tape. I hope to
use it as a demonstration piece
for both the Achim l odge and
for the PA1. Program.”
Messing said he got the Achim
l odge involved in the PA1. Pro
gram. not only because he per
sonally enjoys Manuka more than
any other Jewish holiday, but
also because “I want to add some
thing in the way of a Jewish cul
tural bond to these kids.”
It is sometimes difficult for a
young person to open up to his or
her older pal. At times, accord
ing to Ms. Moore, it requires a
diligent effort before a young pal
will feel enough at ease to express
his or her thoughts.
But sometimes a relationship
just clicks.
Mike Levie, 16, has been Paul
Bloom’s younger pal for two
years, even before the PAL Pro
gram began. “My real brothers
live out of state, so 1 really don't
have too many other people to
talk to,” said Levie, who lives in
Gwinnett County. Me said he
and his pal do “just basic stuff.
We go out and play tennis, bowl,
racquet ball. Sometimes we just
sit around and watch TV.”
Levie added that he and Paul
talk frequently on “just about
everything.”
But the give and take among
pals is a two-way street, accord
ing to one of the older pals in the

Keith Gud. 25, is married and

“1 feel very strongly about the
PAL Program,” he said. “I wouldn’t
participate if 1 didn’t. I just made
a commitment to get involved in
this because I have seen it help a
lot of people. 1 benefited from it
myself. And.il 1 have anything to
do about it. other kids will benefit
from it. also.”
Gud participated in a similar
program in Ins native Cincinnati,
Ohio when he was a child. Mis
mother was a single parent. When
he moved to Atlanta, he joined
the PAl. Program.
As a young participant in the
Big Brother program in Cincinna
ti, Gud said he was able to com
municate with someone other than
his mother; with someone, he
said, “who was more objective
and less critical.”
As an adult in the program, he
contends he gets as much out of it
as his younger pal. Josh Riechlen,
