Musical Organizations Increase Enrollment
The Spelrnnn Gl ee club has grown ton
membership of approximately one hundred
this year. The increase is due largely
to an influx of frosbtian girls who are
rapidly becoming adjusted-w- Gk*M3l3Ub
atmosphere. Thus, with tthe nanyim.^w
and beautiful voices and with the excel
lent guidance and encouragement which we
receive from Dr. Willie Lawrence James,
our director, the Glee Club shows great
promise and is eagerly preparing for what
we hope will be a very successful year.
The Glee Club elected officers At
the beginning of this school year. The
officers are as follows*

Vice President Mary D. Echols
Secretary Barbara Simpson
Treasurer Eleanor Haywood
The Glee Club is in the process of
rehearsing new music for the traditional
Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Christmas Carol
Concert which is to be held on the nights
of December 12th, 15th, and l4th.
The Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelnan Chorus
began this year with very high spirits.
Very able officers were elected, they are
as follows:

"Hallelujah Chorus" by Handel. The Chorus
was accompanied by Dr. Grace Boggs, our
pianist and Miss Lilia Joyce Finch, our
organist.
Our director is a very capable and
hording person who strives daily to bring

head of the music department at Spelman
and at Morehouse,
The Chorus, like the Glee Club, is in
the process of preparing for the annual
Christmas Carol Concert, The members are
learning new and interesting music for
the concert; music which exemplifies the

Before going to the Mounds, the
group had an interesting tour of Sum
mer Hill High School in Cartersville.
The Principal's wife, Mrs. Morgan, who
teaches Latin and Music, is a Spelean
grad.
The Etowah Site represents one of
the largest pre-historic ceremonial cen
ters in the Eastern United States. The
site was occupied and the mounds were
built between 900 A. D. and 1550 A. D,
Indians from a wide area of North Geor-
j gia and East Tennessee gathered for ri-
. tuals taking place in the temples,
< which stood on the summits of the
. mounds, and on the plazas in front of
i the mounds. These ceremonies centered
; around the growing of corn, !, nd involved
|an .elaborate: critual connigtirigaof a
priesthod, symbols, and much exotic pa-
iraphanalia. Many of the ritual objects
,have been found in the current excava-
; tions which were carried out by the Geor
gia History Committee and can be seen
on the site,
| The Speluan group was able to visit
,one of the sites where excavation is
still going on, Cecil Cook, an anthro
pology major from Antioch College, who
is currently doing his field work, de
scribed the interior of the mound and
showed several graves from which skele
tons have been taken.
It was n very informative trip and
everyone was eager to help. This tour
is highly recommended to all interested
peraons.
