Four Very Good Years
A. Porter
Whether you’re from Los
Angeles, California, or live
two blocks from the college
you have, in a sense, broken
old ties, left familiar surround
ings and begun a new life. Any
change is always an unsettling
and slightly traumatic experi
ence. But try as you may to
resist, these four (even this
one year) at Spelman will
change you. It is hoped that
the end of the freshman year
will find you more alert and
articulate. It is hoped that
you will know a little more
about your abilities and short
comings.
The year will be of growth
and development only if you
want it to be. Don’t expect
other people to do your learn
ing and growing for you. The
value of the freshman year is
directly proportional to the
time and effort you expand.
Although your living and study
conditions may not be opulent,
don’t be too discouraged by
them.
There will be many major
and minor crises in your life
this year. You may be over
whelmed by the anguish of
homesickness, classes may be
disappointing, callers are not
always around when you want
them, roommates are not al
ways understanding. Accept
the year for what it is — a
personal experiment of sorts.
Please don’t let fear, indiffer
ence, or complacency, ruin
what can be four very good
years. Good luck, sisters!!!
DOCTOR? LAWYER?? INDIAN CHIEF!AN???
by Joyce Young
Whether you’re planning to become a doctor, lawyer, Indian
chieftan, or to participate in some other noble profession, you’re
bound to find at least one club here at Spelman that will interest
you.
Habla Espanol? If so, the Spanish Club with its emphasis on
the language and the cultures of of its speakers should be of
interest to you.
Perhaps international affairs are more in your line. The
C. C. U. N. will be looking for you.
Do you have dreams of standing in front of 30 bright and
anxious faces in a sunny classroom someday? Prepare yourself
for making you dream a reality by joining the Student National
Education Association (SNEA).
Is the way to a man’s heart truly through his stomach? The
answer to this and many other questions will be yours by joining
the Home Economics Club.
Did the fact that your mother, grandmother, or aunt attended
Spelman influence your decision to come here? Meet other daugh
ters, granddaughters, and nieces in the Granddaughters Club.
Nature lovers, you, too, can unite by participating in the
Biology Club.
If ^parlez vous-ing Francais” is what you prefer, you’ll meet
many girls with the same preference in the French Club.
Are you having trouble getting along with your roommate?
Perhaps your understanding and tolerance of her might increase
if you join the Psychology Club.
And, of course, if you feel that you’re a budding young jour
nalist with bright ideas for the newspaper, we here at the Spotlight
will be delighted to have your help.
Whether you join one of the above mentioned clubs or start
one of your own, we hope that you will do your part by partici
pating in some activity which will help make this school year a
great success.
ZOWIEM OOMPH!!
GURGLE!! YEA YEA!! AMEN!! ETC.!!
by S. Potter
Gee whiz, everyone knows that when you enter the gates of
Spelman, U. S. A., you’re just bubbling with extraordinary spirit,
vitality, and talent. So for heaven’s sake, don’t lock up your abili
ties in the trunk or melt them in the radiator — put them to use.
Would you believe that you could display your talents in 1,000
clubs or organizations at Spelman? Would you believe in 100?
How about in 6?
Zowie!! The Atlanta University-Morehouse-Spelman Players
will not only help mature those dramatic abilities of yours, but
will also train you in various theatre arts. Participants, however,
must be second semester students and have the required average
of 2.000.
Oomph!! The Modern Dance Club will be perfect for those
prima ballerinas, Isadora Duncan, high school majorettes, or
roller-rink champions.
Gurgle!! The Swimming Club specializes in training swimmers
in synchronized swimming. So ya’ll come on in!
Bang! Any interested musicians around? Why not join the
Orchestra?
Yea Yea! The Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Chorus will give
you an opportunity to display your lovely voice in mixed ar
rangements (Smile.)
Amen! Then, too, as a participant in the Spelman College
Glee Club you will help create beautiful music.
Etc. Put your vitality and talent to use by becoming an active
member in one of these organizations.
