ABSOLUTELY PURE
Dear Index:—As Trustees we
desire to make a statement to your
readers in reference to the Southern
Baptist College now being erected
at Manchester. When the Southern
Female College of LaGrange failed
to come to this place, the projectors
of the Southern Baptist College for
women, saw an opportunity which
they believed to be unsurpassed in
the history of our Southern country
to build and equip a Baptist institu
tion of learning without any actual
cost to the denomination. After con
sultation with several leading Bap
tists a contract was entered into
■with the Manchester Investment
Cempany, by which was secured a
donation of a most beautiful tract of
land containing about twenty-five
acres, and $55,000 of the company’s
stock at par value, the proceeds of
which are to be used in the erection
of a building on these grounds. The
contract reads as follows :
Atlanta, Ga., April 21st 1892.
To Manchester Investment Com
pany, Atlanta, Ga.
Gentlemen, if you will donate
twenty-five acres of land more or
less, located in Manchester, near At
lanta, Ga., known as the land sur
veyed and set apart for Southern
Female College and fifty-five thou
sand ($55000) dollars capital stock
of the .Manchester Company pro
ceeds to be used in the erection of
the build ng on said land as follows :
I agree to advance SSOOO on siad
stock and commence the building of
the college to be known as the
Southern Baptist College for the
education of women, and expend
the SSOOO at once and push the
building to completion as fast as
this stock can be turned into cash.
This college is to be known and run
as a Baptist Institution, controlled
by trustees selected by Dr. J. B.
Hawthore and myself two thirds ($)
of whom are to be Baptists, se
lected from Baptist Churches of
Atlanta and Georgia, and of
the South, and the other one
(|) third to be citizens of Atlanta,
of Georgia and of the South, they
to perpetuate themselves. This prop
erty will be perpetuated as a Baptist
Institution of learning. The deed
to the above described college land
tc tte made direct from Manchester
Investment Co., to the truestees,
''they having the power to sell off any
.part of this land they may not believe
to bo necessary to reserve for college
grounds, the proceeds therefrom to be
nted in improving the college prop
erty. Yours truly,
W. L. Stanton.
We accept the above.
Manchester Investment Co.,
E. M. Blalock, President..
W. Woods White, Sec’ty.
This enterprise was entered into
without an opportunity to consult the
denomination at large, but with a
firm belief that it would meet with
the hearty approval of a denomina
tion, who are realizing more and
more the great importance not only
of Christian education, but of insti
tutions of learning owned and con
trolled by Baptists.

The names of the other trustees
would have ben secured, but they
were out of the city and could not
be seen.

WHAT “STRONGER PROOF
Is needed of the merit of Hood’s
Sarraparilla than the hundred letters
continually coming in telling of mar
vellous cures it has effected after all
other remedies had failed? Truly,
Hood’s Sarsaparilla possesses pecu
liar curative power unkown to other
medicines.
Hood’s Pills cure Constipation by
restoring the peristaltic action of the
alimentary canal. They are the best

The position and declarations of the
Republican Convention held in
Atlanta.
The writer was anxious to see this
body of citizens in the late State
.Convention. The speeches that ac
companied their resolution to put out
no ticket for State officers, were lis
tened to attentively that their pur
pose and spirit might be known.
The position taken by all the
speakers, white and colored, save the
lone voice of Pledger was that no
State ticket should be run. It was
said, now is the day for the salva
tion of the Republican Party, in
that the Democrats are divided, let
us cast our votes where we can do the
Democrats most harm. One speak
er said the poor white-folks had
split from the Democrats, let us
meet them and welcome them into
our Republican party. This opin
ion controlled the decision of the
Convention. The members felt they
had a better thing in the strife be
tween the Democrats, and so they
drove their ducks to a better market.
Surely this is significant and pro
claims with trumpet tongue the duty
of every citizen. On Looker.

Notification of errors in the above will se
cure immediate correction. I have failed, as
ter diligent effort, to obtain the minutes of the
following associations: Bethlehem, Central
Western, Ellijay, Mulberry, New Hope. lam
therefore unable to publish time and place
of their meeting.
Now, ns the associations! year closes every
church should remember the great commis
sion. "Go ye into all the world and preach the
gospel to every creature,” and reflect prayer
fully upon their individual responsibility in
the matter. Would it not be well for every
church to appoint a special meeting for prayer,
that the Holy Spirit may direct us m the great
work ? Our Boards are all in arrears with
their missionaries and in groat need of funds.

above sea level,—the altitude which lives greatest security against typhoid fever on the one
