Ratification Meeting.—On lust Tues
day, tho citizens of Floyd county mat

tlio non-intercourse meeting on tlio 10th
inst., wero read. Speeches wero made

resolutions unanimously ratified.
Bcfif-Wo received a communication
some days ago signed “ Philo,”
giving an account of a Pic Nic near
Sunimcrvillo. It was not accompanied
by a responsible name, and according to
our rule in such cases wo declined to
publish it. Wo liavo since received a
note from tlio writer giving his name,
and we would publirli the communica
tion but have misplaced it. Correspon
dents must invariably send tlioir names.
Fire near Calhoun.
Wo learn that tho dwelling of Mr.
John Harkins, situated about one mile
from Calhoun, was consumed by fire on
the night of tho Oth inst. It is not
known how tho fire originated, hut it is
supposed to bo tlio work of an incendia
ry, and and a negro has been arrestod
on suspicion. We do not know Mr.
iiurkin’s loss, but lie was able to save
nothing from the flumes besides tlio
lives of himself and family. The houso
had not long been occupied by him,
and is the second one lie has lost by
fire on tho same spot. Tho other was
burned down soon after it was comple
ted.

of a wholesome competition, should

scale, then these three millions will not
be enough. France will be competing

which the consumption of cotton in
England has just made is hut a single
leap, which may lie repeated indefinite
ly. There are a thousand millions of
mankind upon the globe, all of whom
can be most comfortably clad in cotton.
Every year now tribes and new nntions
aro added lo the category of cotton
wearers. There is every reason to be
lieve that the supply of this universal
necessity will for many years yet to
come fail to keop pace with tlio de
mand, and in tlie interest of that large
class of our countrymen to whom cotton
is bread, wo must continue to hope that
tlio United Spites will ho able to supply
us in years to come, with twice as much
as we bought of them in years post.—

Popueation'of Kansas.—The census
of Kansis, as taken by tho Assessors in
1859, lius just been published. Tlie
complete returns from all the counties,
except six, show 21,028 voters, 406 col
ored persons, and a total population of
69,950. This falls considerably short of
the ratio required by the Conference
Bill, and If Kansas ho admitted into the
Union ns a .State, at tlie present session
of Congress, under tho Wyandotte Con
stitution, the English Bill will either
have to be repealed; or disgraced by a
direct violation of ito provisions.
