Abnndbus the Democratic Party.
The Whig contains a lotter from the
Hon. E. M. Yorgor, a distinguished cit
izen of Mississippi, in which that gen
tleman declares himself for Bell and
Everett. It is well known that lust De
cember Mr. Yorgor publicly allied him
self with the Democratic party. Be
lieving, from the unerring signs of tlio
times, that Bell and Everett nro tlio
only national candidates in the field,
and the only ticket which stands a
f host of a chalice of success over tho
Hack Republicans, he gives his support
in this contest to Boll ami Everett. Wo
copy the concluding portion of Mr.
Yerger’s lotter:
without at tempting to discuss the
profossod principles of either party in
the field, it seems to mo that tho only
questions a patriot should now ask,
ought to be: How cnn wo save the
Union? How cnn we crush tlio Black
Republicans? Whatever party wo nm>
heretofore havo noted with, Wu of tin

mid it becomes us ns n great and intelli
gent people, to put tin cud to tho right
of party tyranny. 11 has already nearly
proved fatal to our country. I mli/id-
u»l independence is now necessary to
preserve ft. Without doubting the de
votion of any party in Mississippi in the
interests of tho South, it cannot, I
think, bo successfully denied that tlio
Democracy havo failed, ns a National
party, to secure that which was the very
orin of tho dissolution. Theso opin-

Jn 1810, A. T. Mason United States
Senator from Virginia, fought with his
stator's husband, John McCarty, hero.
McCarty was avorso to lighting, and
thought there was no necessity fur it;
hut Mason would fight. McCarty nam-
muskets, loaded with grapo-shot, and so
near together that they would lilt heads
if they roll on their facos. This was
changed by tho st conds to loading with
bullets, and taking twolvo feet as tho
distanco. Mason was killed instantly,
and McCarty, who had his oollar-bono
broken, still livos with Mason’s sister in
Georgetown. His hair turnod whlto so
soon after tho tight as to causo much
comment. Ho has since beon solicited
to act as second in a duol, but rofusod,
in accordance with a pledge lie made
to his wife soon after killing her broth
er.
In 1820, Commodoro Decatur was
killed in a duel by Commodore Barron.
At the first fire tlioy both fell forward
with their heads within ten foot of eaot
other; and, as each supposod himself
mortally wounded, eacli fully and froo-
ly forgavo tlio other, still lying on the
ground.
Decatur expired immediately, but
Barron ovontually recovered.
In 1812, two strangers mimed Lcgn
and Sega, appeared bore, fought and
Sega was instantly killed. Tho neigh
bors only learned this muuli of their
names from tho marks on tlioir gloves
loft on tho ground. Lcga was not
hurt.
In 1822, Midshipman Locke, was kill
ed hero by a clerk in tlio Treasury De
partment, named Gibson. Tho hittor
was not hurt.
In 1820* Henry Clay fought (ids hoc-
oml duel) with John Randolph just
across tho Potomac, as Randolph pre
ferred to die, if at all, on Virginia soil.
He received Mr. Clay’s shot, und then
fired into tho air. This was in accord-
poi
edge, by some of tho most distinguish
ed supporters of Mr. Breckinridge in
Mississippi, who havo. furthermore,
patriotically declared their willingnoss
to support Mr. Boll, should it indood
appear that lie is the strongest candi
date in tho fiold. Tlio recent elections,
I think, have clearly proved this to ho
a fact, and it is not too much to hope
that thtrpat riot ism of those gentlemen
will soon show itself by an open decla
ration for Mi. Bell.
In this contest 1 am for crushing the
Itonublicnii party, rather than tho ele
vation of any other, and shall therefore
east mv vote for Bell and Everett, in
my judgment, the strongest National
candidates in tho fiold.
