"From the publisher’s own statement of
,.nur Family Physician,” we are favorably
• r p«ed with the book. The author of
XJdoes not pretend todo away with
,le necessity of a physician, in severe cases,
but undertakes to give, as he asserts,
this important question, and
tax payer ought to—should be pres
et instruction for the treatment of pot-
M0S and all violent attacks wherein all feel
that something ought to be done betore a
physician could be had. Consulerab e
Lc is devoted to nursing, and suitable
and properly prepared food for the sick,
ne treats also of the symptoms of diseases,
and the proper way to prevent sickness.-

We comply with the request to publish
the following respectful suggestions:
To the Eon. Mayor and C tty Cotmcil:
We, the undersigned citizens and tax
payers of Jho city of Borne, most respect
fully call your attention to a matter which
is eliciting remarks and complaints from
many who have observed the manner of the
working of tho street hands. They are di
vided into three sqads, and each sqnad is
without any regular, competent overseer.—
True, the street committee is expected to
look after the hands, but the street commit,
tee are all men of business, and they can
not be expected to neglect their private
business for the public, without fair remu
neration, hence the street hands work un
der many disadvantages, anl frequently
two and three are working at one thing
wheD one could do the same thing that the
three could do in the same time. In this
way much money is spent to no purpose.—
We therefore respectfully propose for your
consideration, that a good, industrious
thoroughgoing, vigilant overseer be selected
and appointed to take charge of all the
hands, and work them together, so that
he can always be present to aid them by his
judgment, under the supervision and con
trol of the street committee.
We think the concentration of the labor,
under the supervision of a vigilant over
seer, will, upon experiment be found to be
much preferable, and be the means of accom
cor * plishing a great deal more than the present
mode.

Mysteriously and Dangerously Shot.
We are credibly informed that Mr. Jer-
K Wilson, who lives on Tarapin Creek,
neat Ladigs, Ala-, was shot last Friday
ni'dit, receiving a ball, or buck shot in his
left Hip, one in his left thigh, one in his
left ankle, and one in his r ght leg.
Our informant states that he had heard
various rumors about the matter. One was
that Mr. Wilson and six other young men
were out “ku-kluxing” o t that night, and
that the whole parly was fired upon from an
ambash; while another report is that ho was
shot while on his own, or his father's plan
tation, in search of a horse that had got out
.of the stable and wandered off.

BACK FROM LIBERIA.
African Experience of a Returned Colored
Sian.
Great Destitution among the Freedmen.
An appeal to the charily of the North
ern benevolent is made on behalf of the
freedmen in Washington city, who ate rep
resented to be in a very destitute condition,
and we have no doubt many thousands of
dollars will be raised for them. It is a par
ty necessity which keeps the Federal Capi
tol swarming with African Lazircui to con
trol the politics of the city—to vote away
taxes to which it contributes not a cent, and
to illustrate the policy of universal man
hood suffrage at tjfte seat of thg govern
ment.
A little well directed counsel and action
cn the part of the white radical leaders
would soon clear Washington of these idle
negroes. They could all find profitable la
bor In Virginia and farther Souths—but
they have a political mission and cannot be
spared, go the radicals cry out for Chi
nese labor on one aide of their mouths, and
alms for African idlers on tbs other. The
blacks are to do the fancy and ornamental
part o' manhood suffrage, and the Chinese
the useful. The one is to be kept for show
and the other to be imported for service.—
Well, go ahead,—Macon Tel.

The Chinese.
A Boston clergyman, Mr. Abbott, who
has been studying the Chinese in San
Francisco, is strongly in favor of their emi
gration to this country. He says they
are all bonnd to go back to China, and will
do it as soon as they bave a little money
He remarks that the Chinese character is a
perfect incarnation of non-resistance. It
answers to the ethics of the gospel in many
ways. It never rent ers evil for evil. Its
chief glory is meekness of spirit. At first
men abuse and mike a mock of this dispo
sition, but by and by it commands respect,
and the remark is made that the Ch‘usman
is harmless, therefore leave him alone.—
The writer observes that a hundred differ
ent branches of labor are already depend
ent upon the Chinese. They are faithful
to their employees. They are apt imitators
and can do anything that is shown them.=- |

From the Columbus (Georgia) Sun.
We were fortunate enough last afternoon
to have a short interview with Gus Gul
dens, colored, who arrived here yesterday
morning all the way from Liberia. He
left here last May a year ago, with a party
of moie than three hundred emigrants,
and is amply satisfied with the experience
in that far off land of promise. He says
it was the happiest day of his life when
he again set foot upon his native Eoil. Out
of the party of three hundred who left this
vicinity, two hundred have died. Most
of the remainder are much dissatisfied and
anxious to return, bnt many of them will
never be able to do so. Some few are
making money and contemplate returning
when they realize a little more. Out of
his o*n immediate family he lost four
members:—his wife and three children
He also lost about 83,000 in money. Hfc
pnts Liberia down as the hottest country
in the world and very sickly for those not
acclimated.
He says, further, that-itis poor place for
agriculture as well as the meohanioal trades.
The people are mainly a trading class.
They gather the products of the country,
palm wood, sugar, coffee, syrup, etc., and
trsfic with vessels arriving from differ
enf countries for dry goods ,etc. These they
specluate on, and a smart traficker is ena
bled to realize considerable property in this
way. For instance if a vessel arrives from
New York with a cargo of United States
prodnets, the officers barter her cargo off
for products of Liberia, and in such a way
as to realize doable the amount of money
on returning to New York that they would
have received by selling for cash in Liberia.
G us says it rains six months in the year in now
Liberia, BPli tho rainy season fhe natives
call winter; but he experienced no cold
weather while there. Ee says ho was as
tonished to find himself on the other side
of the sod; that is, the sun was to the-
north of him, and shone in at the north
door of his house, just opposite from the
direction it shines here. He says be will
write an article fot the press himself short
ly, and in the meantime advises colored peo-
dle to stay hero.
Wiiat Next ?—The searching manner
of the Government is illustrated in the an-
sionary field, and says

against this road on Saturday last, at suit
of a combination of Railroads said to eta;

application was made were, among others,
that the road was without a charter—had
obtained State aid by fraudulent represen
