than ever convinced that Rome is the city
of this part of Georgia.
Fine Buggies ana Cnrriages-Tomllnson,
Dcniorest & Co*, N* Y.
We take pleasure in calling the attention
of our readers to the advertisement of the
abovc named, well known manufacture.s of
busies and carriages, of all descriptions.
Hundreds of the famous Woodruff Concord
buggy have been sold in this section, dur-
iag.the past five years, giving complete
satisfaction. Powers, & Whiteley,are Agents
for the firm in Rome, having descriptive
catalogues and prices of all the vehicles
made by Tomlinson, Demurest & Co , and
we would advise all persons desiring to pur
chase, to give them a call.
Reynolds’ Patent Plow.—Znber &
Rush, of this county, own the patent for
uie above named plow. This is the only
ploW'that has ever taken one Dure’ from
the brow of Brinley, and hence, must be
some shakes. We ' commend itlto our rea
ders as an excellent implement.
—Jast.
Weather.—Just, enough rain on yes
terday to lay the dust nicely, and now ev
erything is as balmy and' fragrant as
morning in May. This remark applies
s’rictly to the weather, and has no connec
tion with the bir hog pen back of our
window.
Scotch Plows.—Mr. J. M. Selkirk
exhibited at the Fair two plows made in
“bonnie Scotland” and. wprked,by a son of
that “auld country.”' These Alligator look
ing implements, excited a great deal atten
tion and did excellent work. We hope to
see the best machines in the whole world at
probably as hot-hearted a Rainbow as is our next Fair.

plimented, by the Directors, of the Fair,
with a ten dollar Goblet to each, for their
efficient assistance, voluntarily rendered, to
the Secretary.
Home all right on the Silver-Plated Ware
.’sene.
While we admired the spirit, enterprise
and energy manife ted by McBride & Oo.
dating the late Fair, we will confess that
wc felt a litt’c small when we raw him so
triumphantly earryijg off the prize for sil-
verfluted ware. But our equilibrium has
heeo restored by the knowledge that Mr.
Joa. E. Veal, our enterprising townsman,
had on the railroad a much larger lot of
silvc plated ware than the display made by
McBri-ie.
These goods were kept away by an un-
thonght of detention on the train. When
jou come right down to the fight it’s mighty
bard to beat Rome at anything, or h er
plucky little jeweler either.
Whitfield Superior Court.
Sixteen divorce cases on the Whitfield
Superior Court docket.
We clip from the Atlanta Constitution
the following account of u very interesting
action by that court.
A very interesting ease of conflict of ju
risdiction arose, that is curious, and a mat
ter of general bearing. S. H. Biker, agent,
and A. L. Harris, supervisor W. & A. Rail
road, took a game of cards, as men will do
sometimes. The Grand Jury of tho co n-
ty last week found a true bill against them
for betting. Perhaps there is no county in
tiie State where this peccadillo is more
sharply watched and summarily punished.
They were brought before Notary Pub
lic and ei-Officio J. P , J. A. Glenn, on
Saturday, demanded a trial, were convicted
and fined a hundred dollars each. When
the ease on t.ie Superior Com t docket was
called, Judge Parrott was informed of the
action of the Notary Public, but refused to
recognize it, and ordered a bench warrant
issued for tho arrest of the parties.
The question is an interesting one. Un
doubtedly the Notary has jurisdiction of
such eases iias he Jurisdiction after the
Grand Jury o( the county have presented
the offense to the Superior Court, and when
the Court is in session to try the cases.—
Tho Grand Jury in their presentments
reproved tho Notary, Col. Glenn, for act
ing in the matter.
The case will go to the Supremo Court.
The Supreme Court of Missouri hasre>
ceutly decided that the registering officer
may he held accountable in damages, for
the refusal to register a citizen without a
just cause.

How fo Mend Greenbacks.—-This is
the way to mend torn greenbacks and cur
rency; smooth ont the edges carefully, aod
moisten them with the finger tip after wet
ting it on the tODgue. Then lay the bill on
a piece of writing paper, carefully drawing
the edges together, and lay another, piece
of writing paper over it.
A few seconds rubbing with the finger will
make it adhere, and a little adroitness will
enable yon when it is dry to lift the bill
from the paper without tearing it. The
seam then will be invisible, and the strong
est part of the hill.
Apology,—We render an apology to
out readers for lack of method and matter
in this issue. The Fair has knocked us
into a cocked hat, and the Director’s offi
cial report occupy most of onr Dapcr.
Hook and Ladder Company.—We
me clad to learn that a movement is on
foot to organize a hook and ladder compa
ny in Homo. It is needed, and with a
good one, and our two splendid steam fire
engine companies, with a good bell at the
engine house, our city will be in efficient
order for fighting fire. We hope the City
Council wiil give the hook and ladder com
pany such encouragement as is needed.
Theatrical.—The Templeton’s gave a
SicneSt to the Fire Department. Proceeds
tfortj.fire dollars—Show poor—velociped-
ung, erratic—attendance slim. Temple-
rtou’s have gone—whither we know not.
-Business.—The merchants are most df
fibem busy in filling-orders for the country
people, who seeing their virtues paraded in
*ihe Conrier, sent them in profusely. Those
uko have not advertised are busy fixing
up their advertisements at present, and
*bcy will appear, (we doobt not,) in onr
next.
Atlanta Nurseries.—Messrs. Hardin
Hole A Co., of Atlanta, have a large sup
ply of various kinds .of Southern raised
fruit trees for sale. Dr. Jas. D. Thomas, at
•Hargrove’s store, is agent in Rome. Call
and examine specimens and get a cata-
logue. It will soon be time to transplant
1 tarns.
Plows—Erratta in Premium List.
Supposing that two premiums on. plows
tfere enough for any one man, we did not
■closely notice the list after we had record,
• ed that number for “King” Brinley. But
nt transpires later that this greedy mon
arch was entitled to two more, viz: For
Hrinley’s Universal Jffo. 1 Plow and at-
chment, and for Brinley’g Sub-soil plow,
aving taken four premiums, the old gen-
:, and too$c on?

How Hostettcr’s Bitters cure Dyspepsia.
THE WHOLE STORY IS A NUTSHELL.
The office of the ztomaoh ia to convert the food
into & cream like semi-fluid called Chyle. This
is effectei partly by the action of a solvent,
called the gastric juice, which exudes from the
coating of the stomach, and partly by a median
ical movement of that organ, which chums, as
it were, the dissolving aliment. The Chtxs.
passes from the stomach into the duodenum*.hr
entrance to the bowels, where it is subjected to
the action of the bile* and the nutritions portion
of it converted into a fluid called Chyle, which
eventually becomes blood.
Now, it is evident that if the great solvent, the
gastric jnico, is not produced in sufficient quan
tity, or if the mechenical action of the stomach
is not sufficiently brisk, thejfrsfprocess of di
gestion willbe but imperfectly performed. It is
also clear that if the liver, which plays such an
important part in changing the nourishing por
tion of the chyme into the material of the blood,
is congested, or in any unnatural condition, the
second process of the’tiro fdilutes is dyspepsia,
complicated with biliousness.
The mode in which HOSTETTER’S BITTERS
operate in snch cases is this, they invigorate -the
cellular membrane of the stomach, which
evolves the gastric juice, thereby insuring an am
ple sufficiency of the fluid to completely dissolve
the food. They also act upon the nerves of *ne
stomach, causing an acceleration of the mechan
ical movement necessary to reduce the food to a
homeogenious mass. They also act specifically
upon the liver, strengthening it, and so enabling
it to prodace ample and regular supply of bile,
for the purpose of converting the nutritions par
ticles of the Chyme into Chyle, and promote the
passage through the bowels of the useless debris.
In this way, HOSTETTER’S BITTERS cure
dyspepsia and liver complaint. The explana
tion is plain, simple, pbilososhical, and true
