The following is a beautiful extract
from the Christian Index:
Our existence would become weary
and monotonous if there was nothing
calling, forth effort on our part. It
would be a lazy swinging in the ham
mock of inactivity. Hut harvest fol
lows toil, and treasure is had for the
digging. Stones are hewn into walls,
trees are woven into cities, and metals
are hammered into machines. The
Sabbath is a blessed day in which the
grand type of Heaven bends down for
a day to excite our aspiration and long
ing for its spiritual freedom, but sixfold
more are there blessings in the work
work days of the week. The Sabbath
points to “what is to bethe work
days declare “what now is.”
The world in its progress is ours. Its
advancement in civilization and goy-
emment, its discoveries in science, and
its applications in art, are ours. Science
is not against us. God in the rock
God in redemption. God of the worm,
that crawls at our feet is God of the
saint that sits at the Saviour’s sided
>V'e have nothing to fear from the dis
coveries of science. The slaves of the
leyil work for us. They task their
powers to disprove our religion. They
compass iand and sou to find a weapon
with which to destroy us. They .-took
their arsenal witli guns forged in the
clouds and in the bowels of the earth.
But with the authority of truth, and
with a commission from the Great Com
mander, we lay hold on all their die
coverics and inventions and make them
praise God.
The zoologist said he had ruined us,
That he had discovered man in em-
bryo, in the monad, and that, under
bioplasmic forces it had developed
through a series of evolutions, and fi
nally culminated in the man. We saw
the eagle as he Hew from his eyrie, and
his shadow made dark our pathway
as he eamo down on his death-swoop,
but as he passed under the Cross he be
came a snow-white dove, and, cooing
tenderly, lie nestled in the bosom of
our holy Christianity. We saw the
lion as he awoke from his long slum
bers in the wilderness. lie came with
shaggy mane and blood-red eyes, and
his deafening roar made us tremble,
but as he passed underneath the shad
ow of Calvary he was transformed into
a lamb, and he folded his harmless
form at the feet of Jesus. The burning
world of the astonomcr came dashing
through space, and the ever increasing
light and growing flame mado us fear
iest we should be consumed, but when
it reached the temple door a gentle
hand touched it and placed it
candlestick, and it became a new light
to show U3 the way to God. hot scien
tific infidelity work, if it choose, under
a commission from the devil, but the
results of the labors shall be ours,
MacMahon’e Fate.
Now Ynrk Herat,I.
Marshal MacMahon i.- lighting France
under the delusion that he is fighting
only a disorderly and contemptibl
faction. Delusions like this have trou
bled a great many executives whose
unpleasant experiences are recorded in
tho histories of different nations. Charles
I, in collision with tho British people,
thought lie was opposed only by a few
fierce fanatics, and lost his head before
he had time to learn better. George
ill of England was persuaded that hi3
subjects in the colonies were not really
in revolt, but that a handful of ambi
tious loaders used the name of the peo
ple without their authority. His error
cost the British crown a greater depen
dency than was ever possessed by any
■ •tiler crown. Charles X, in France,
•mil Louis Philippe were equally de
luded as to the power that opposed
their sovereign will, each believing that
he had to deal only with a group of
malcontents that might be ridden down
by a brigade of cavalry, and scouting
'.lie notion that the will he endeavored
•o .suppress was that of the whole
French people. In all times the same
error has been fetal to thrones or to sov
ereigns ; and the French President, if
he were acquainted with the history of
his own country, might find recorded
in it the necessary result of his present
course. As a doctor with the record of
a post mortem examination before him
may criticise with serene severity tho
medical treatment that was lavished
on the defunct, so should a man in au
thority in France bo able to judge of
the politics of his country in tho light
of tlie experience oi his predecessors.
But the faculties of MacMahon seem
too blunt for this. Urged forward by
ambitious politicians, who use him as
the stalking horso of their personal
schemes, he goes blindly on to inevita
ble ruin. * 1
Vaccination Parties.
[Britieh Modical Journal.]
In America the fashionable amuse
ment of the day is very original. The
Yankees give themselves up in the
most joyous spirit to tho amusamentof
vaccination parties. They give soirees,
and in lieu of providing for these reun
ions refreshments of tho usual kinds,
they offer to the guests assorted varieties
of vaccine matter. At a concert, for
example, after the-excution of each piaco
doctors come at the call of host and
pass throrugh the rooms, iustead of ser
vants, who usually offer tempting dish
es, end in lieu of the .words, “Sir, or
madam, would you liko an ice, orsamo
punch, or some sandwiches?" they ask,
“Would you like infant vaccination or
cow vaccination?” and each one answers
according toliis fancy or to the’ degree
of confidence ho feols in each remedy,
“Give me tlireo children and five cows,’
one will say; “Four cows and four chil
dren,” another will say, limiting them
selves aways to eight incisions, which
every good vaccination is held to
require. Besides these soirees of vac
cination, otliers are hold at which the
vaccinated meet to compare their arms
and to ascertain the success of the oper
ation. It is not unusual now in Amer
ica, when a lady wishes to justify the
perference which she feels for any gen
tleman, to expaess herself in these
terms: “How can I help it? We have
been vaccinated togethei.”
It is stated that Senators Thurman,
Bayard, Davis, of Wost Virginia, and
others of tho' leading Democrats have
recently been in consultation with ref-
rence to tho approaching session of
< ongress, and have decided that the
Democrats will vote solidly to confirm
all of the PresidentVnominatioris. They
' say that if the Republicans don’t like
the nominations, they may adjust
themselves to the situation as best they
may. The confirmations will be had
notwithstanding. 1”. .

Shocking Details of an Atrocious Deed.
Knoxvillo Tribune.
As the east bound passenger train
(No. 2) passed a point about two miles
above Carter’s Station at 11 o’clock
Sunday night, enginner Bender discov-
cd an object on the track and attempt
ed to stop, but passing safely over the
object he wistled “off brakes” aDd ran
on to Bristol on time, where he inform
ed engineer Maxey (who would return
on train No. 1) of the affair, and asked
him to investigate the same as he came
down. lie also failed to stop, but pass
ing engineer Franklin at Carter’s, in
charge of the east bound train informed
him of the affair.
Upon nearing the spot Mr. Franklin
states that he halted the train and dis
covered the object to be that of a body,
which proved to be the remains of Jas.
Dempsey, a brother of ex-policeman
Dempsey, of this city. The two pre
ceding trains had passed over the body
severing both legs above the knees, and
scattering the skull and brains of the
unfortunate man for some distance
along the track. Ilis shoes were found
a short distance from where the body
was lying, and about thirty yards fur
ther was discovered a puddle of blood,
where Dempsey evident!}- met his
death. Besides, after the two trains
had passed over the corpse, the body
had been again placed on the track in
a position that the next passing train
would crush the breast, in the left por
tion of which was found a ghastly
wound, probably inflicted with a knife.
The body, when found, was entirely
divested of clothing—probably to pre
vent recognition. Dr. Maloney, of
Greeneville, who was on the train, ex
amined the body, when the same was
given in charge of the section master
and returned to Dempsey’s mother,
widow lady, who lives at Carter’s Sta
tion, where an inquest was held over
the remains Sunday last.

The allusion to Henry Clay made by
the President and other speakers at
Louisville, eliciting wild applause from
the crowd, Bhow how strong a hold that
remarkable man had on the affections
of the people. It is doubtful if any
other American statesman has ever
been regarded by his followers with
such enthusiastic admiration, or has
ever held them by such close personal
tie as the great Kentucky commoner.
Tho memories of Washington and Lin
coln are indeed more generally revered,
but they were exceptional cases. Clay
was essentially a partisan leader, and
an unsuccessful one at that; yet the
men who followed his banner still re
gard those days as the proudest of their
political lives, and their hearts still
warm their eyes fill with tears as they
recall the gallant leadership of Harry
' the West. Ilis personal magnetism
was a source of great power to him, and
contributed in no small degree to the
influence by which he impressed him
self and liis ideas on American politics.
Its lasting quality is shown by the en
thusiasm which even now the mention
of his name evoked in a Kentucky au
dience, and for that matter we are not
but the same is tine oi other States
as well.
