We copy the following important srtiele
of intelligence from the National Intelligen
cer, received by yesterday’s letter mail, the
paper mail having come uo farther lhao
fruui Richmond :
« Qviieval Post-Office, March 16, 1818.
The amount of Bank Notes, Post Notes,
Drafts, Bills of Exchange tuuL Checks {sa
ved, and recovered from theyfobbery of the
mail of the 11 ill) is about ifinety thousand
dollars, and now in possession of the Gene
ral Post Office. As soon as the mutilated
fragments of the addresses aud envelope*
can be arranged, with their proper contents,
they will be forwarded by wail, as original
ly designed.
A descriptive schedule of the whole will
be immediately published, and transmitted
to the several sections of the United States,
for the information of those concerned.
Notices were immediately issued to the
Banks, merchants, and others, in Philadel
phia, of the robbery ; and an express dis
patched to New-York, to guard against the
payment or acceptance of drafts, checks, or
post notes, which may have becD robbed
from the mail, aud not yet saved or recov
ered.”
A well dressed young man, named Nicho
las Williams, who arrived hereon Friday
afternooH, in the ship Pennsylvania, from
Philadelphia, was arrested on Saturday
evening, under a warrant from J. H. Mit
chell, Esq. charged with having passed
several hundred dollars in Bills of 3 and
gl, of the Bank of Fayette County , Penn
sylvania, ” which are believed tube fictitious
or forged. They are signed “ A Torrance ,
President,” “ P. Morse, Cashier,” and ars
filled up to “ J. Smart,” dated at New-Sa
lem,Jan. 1817. They are executed in a
must slovenly manner, and several of them
are not even signed by the Cashier. Whether
there is any such Bank in existence, or Hot,
there appears very little doubt, that the Bills
iu question are Spurious; and Williams
wag, accordingly, committed to jail yester
day morning, to take his trial ut the nest
| Court of Sessions. Besides (hose which he
had passed, other Bills, of the same deno
mination, to the amount of about 600 dollars,
were found upon him. We are informed
that iie was doing business, and failed, in
Augusta, (Geo.) about twelve months since.
