AUGUSTA HERALD.
TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 1818.
WE feel much gratified in being able
to announce the arrival here on Saturday
last, of the STEAM-BOAT CAROLINA,
Capt. Cole, with the Company’s Freight
ing Boats, No. 5 and 6, in tow fully loaded,
in 114 hours from Savannah—The warm
est friends to the prosperity of this, nnd the
adjacent states, eould hardly have content- j
plated such a prompt and certain inter
course with Savannah, by means of which
Augusta is almost rendered a maritime port;
the maturing a system so extensive as that !
contemplated by the Company, is an ardu- j
ous one, and ot a nature to require much
preparation ; we are therefore happy to \
learn, that all their arrangements are quite
as forward as the nature of sueh an under- |
taking admits, for extending to other parts
of the state, those benefits which our city 1
already derives from this most important j
improvement, in the mode of transportation. ;
Wealth of Louisiana.
A Milledgevilie paper says, thatnpgroes i
on the sugar estates of Louisiana, are worth !
irom 600 to 1000 dollars yearly—and the
sugar crops are worth from 20 to 150,000
dollars a year. Sugar land close to the city, ;
sells far 5000 dollars an acre, aud no sugar
laud sells for less than 800 dollars an acre.
Mechanics of all descriptions soon grow rich.
Decent board is from 40 to 60 dollars per
mouth, but claret is allowed to be used with
discretion without any extra charge; house
rent is high, and even naked lots on the front
street, 60 feet rear, rent for 3 dollars a foot
per mouth. The American population is
increasing, and already balances the French i
iu the Legislature. That there is a vast i
field open for persons fond of public life ; as 1
the ereoles are averse to it, and the state
pays her otheers better than any of her sis- '
ter states.
The governor has 7500 dollars a year;
judge of the supreme court 5000 dollars ;
inferior judges in the city 4000, aud those
in the country 1500 and 2000 ; jet these
salaries are insignificant when compared to
the profits of a cultivated farm.”
T hese amounts appear enormous ; yet they
must be great. If the West-lndia sugar
planters can live by their business, those of
Louisiana must soon grow immensely rich.
It is not understood that our sugar lauds are
less productive than those of the West-
Indies, aud (he duty that we levy on the im
parted article acts as a bounty equal to, per
haps, nearly a third of the amount received |
for it by the West-lndia planter in favor of
our own. As the cultivation rises to meet
the demand for consumption, this duty j
should be reduced, it is too heavy ; for
sugar, to a very considerable p .rt of our
population, is as a real necessary of life.

Extract of a letter tu the Editors, dated
“Gibraltar, January 12, 1818.
“ The Franklin, 74, arrived here last
Bight, in 12 days from Portsmouth, England,
aud has just exchanged a salute with the
Rock. Commodore Chauucey, with all his
squadron, is as Syracuse.
“ The Barbarians have been quiet, and
done nothing that w e know of that can be !
considered important; though they are at 1
*>rur with several powers. The Russian fleet,!
of 5 sail of the line and 2 frigates, were
spoken a few days ago in the Bay of Biscay,
bound to Cidiz. We do not yet know cer
tainly the terms of the understanding be
tween Russia aud Spain, relative to this
armament.”

ERROR IN SURVEYING.
Nothing is more common, than that two
Surveyors should differ in their results of
the estimate of the same survey. It fre
quently happens also, that the same Survey- i
or, with the same chain and compass will !
produce different results. This difference j
proceeds in most cases from a variation in
the length of the chain. For every time the
chain is stretched, the rings which join the I
links will give. Also if the chain is used in
wet ground, and particularly in ground ad ja-'
cent to salt water, the iron is corroded, and
the rings become much thinner; the conse
quence of which is, that the more a chain is
used the longer it becomes. We have known
a four pole chain, after being in use for six
months, extend fourteen inches Every Sur
veyor ought therefore to measure his chain
before he commences.—We have seen chains
that have been in constant use for several
years three feet longer than their proper
length, without the circumstance having
been noticed by the possessor. In survei ii,<-
land which is valuable, an error of this sort
produces the most important consequences.
A person picking op a newspaper, (he
other day, read as follows : “ The Legis
lature of Maryland has granted characters \
to five new banks.” “fiis a great pity
r a by-st under replied) that they had not
taken the same care of some of the old
ones s for several of them are very much in
want of characters .” But on examination !
it appeared the grant was charters, a thing
that very often exist entirely distinct from
character .
