AUGUSTA HERALD.
TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 1818.
IT may be interesting perhaps to per
aons particularly attached to the Presbyte
rian form of chureh government, and espe
cially to those liviug a distance from Augus
ta, to be informed that the “Synod of South-
Cnrolina and Georgia ,” will meet in this
place on the fourth Thursday in the preseut
ponth.
A BTLL of the Bonk of South-Carolina
of Two Dollars, has been altered so neatly
and ingeniously to Fifty Dollars, that it has
been passed oft" here for the latter amount, to
persons well skilled in bank paper—and by
y way of experiment, it has been several times
offered and taken, since a caution on the sub
ject of this deception has been published—
This we mmtion that persons may be on
their guard should bills similarly handled
be offered to them. The following commu
nication, as it appeared in the Chronicle, will
give an idea of the ra inner in which the de
ception was in this case effected:
“Some d ys past a bill of the “ Bank of
the State of South-Carolina,” was passed
in this place tu Mr. B. Piequet for fifty
dolltrs, which on examination is found to be
a two dollar bill so ingeniously altered,
tbit persons not very conversant in bank
paper, might readily be imposed upon by it
'—i’he alteration is made by taking the
> figures 30, and the words fifty, from a fifty
cent bill of the bank of 3i>u> li-Carolina, and
neatly pasting them over the figure 2 and
the word two, in a two dollar bill, wherever
the se words and figures are required ; so !
that the remaining parts of the bill, together
with the signatures, retain their g nmtie
appearance—and thus altered, the bill looks i
so well that it. had no doubt passed through |
several hands for fifty dollars before thede- I
ceptiou was detected—and those only who
observe w ith a critical eye the devices an ? J
particular letter of each denomination of
bills wou d readily d teet the imposition.
The bill is left for inspection at the Augusta
Book-Store, and as it is prob iltle that other
bills of the same kiud are in circulation, our
citizens are cautioned to he on their guard
against them. The ingenuity, however, of
the counterfeiting and fraudulent gentry will
probably keep full pace with the circum
spection of the most cautious and correct.”
