riage driver, a tall yellow, very artful and
likely follow, of 22 years old, of a coarse
voice, had on when lie went off, a glazed
leather hat, dark homespun pantaloons and
a round jacket, either of blue cloth or
striped homspun. John being unwilling
to be left at a summer residence in Fair
field District, South Carolina; took on the
eleventh pistant one of hi* masters carri
age horses, took also a bridle round
his shquldhrs and made his escape to go,
as he said, to the plantation on Black
Swamp, St Peter’s Parish, S. Carolina.—
He rode bare backed, was traced unto
Granby ferry below Columbia. He there
rode the same large bay h-.ise on which
lie made his escape, the horse both trots
and paces, a starm his forehead, his hind
feet or pastern joints appear as if they
were swelled, and it is believed he has
one or both hind feet white. Five dollars
reward will be given tor the horse. It is
presumed John will endeavour to make
his way to Augusta, where be lias an un
cle a free yellow man, perhaps by the
name of Kitt, from whom lie may obtain a
free pass, may alter his name and dress,
and try to make his escaue to Virginia, qr
lie may be employed on the river as a
boat band. Any person who apprehends
sahl John and secures him so well in some
safe jail, as that the subscriber gets him
shall receive the above reward.

of June, 1818, while absent, my trunk
was taken f rom home to the house of
Charles Coutteau, of Burke county, and
on recovery and examination of the same,
I found the following papers missing, viz ;
One note of hand given by said Coutteau,
made payable to myself, Ist day of Janua
ry, 1818, wpich Coutteau confessed lie
took by leave of Mrs. Fnllwood. Three
receipts of Andrew Lambert, jun. viz—one
of {s2oo for cash, dated in November 1818,
ditto g 150, for ditto, dated in January,
1819—ditto for two notes of hand on
Thomas Scarbrough, to me payable, Ist
day of January, 1818, for S2S each, toge
ther with an order from said Lambert,
given Joshua Stone, to me directed, for a
note of hand on W. W. Oliver, for g 333
>3 1-3, p lyable January Ist, 18(8,
which notes on presentment by Lambert.
& Stone, were honor’d by Messrs. Scar
brough U Oliver. More papers of value
were also taken—viz; a deed for a tract
of land lying in Anslow county, N. Caro
lina, containing 300 acres, more or less,
■djoining lands of Col. John Spieer, dec.
and others. Several merchants accounts
current, bonds, receipts, acceptances and
others, that I could nut particularly recite
in schedule by warrant of search before
lolm Royal, Esq.—on which w,e found ma
ny goods, and chattels in said Couttcau’s
possession. Last named papers, 1 held
vouchers in a suit at law in Equity,< as heir
and acting executor, vs. the executor to
the lust will and testament of Maj. Hurst,
sen. late of Scriven county, deceased, for
arrears of said executor to said decedent’s
esiate, viz. g 2734 7 Oj, as per schedule
handed my attorneys.
All of which 1 should have published
before, had 1 not entertained a hope that
ihe same would be dropped, or placed
wfiere I could recover them, without pre
ferring a bill of ndictment, and being tin*
d'T the disagreeable necessity of giving
Mr.Coutteau and my affectionate wife this
painful reflection. i
A liberal reward will be given for the
.•tcovery of the aforesaid papers, or any
part thereof—particularly Mr. Lambert’s
—as, fortunately, I have recourse to re
cords for the balance.
