affection of numerous friends. But
in the midst of ins usefulness, and
from a stale of apparent health, it
has pleased the Almighty to call him
from temporal scenes. His bereav
ed family are by this dispensation
sorely alfliclcd. He was an affec
tionate husband—an indulgent pa
rent—n kind master---an agreeable
companion, and a sincere friend—
and those who have known him in
these relations, will long remember
his w-ortli and revere his memory.
His>remains were yesterday com
mitted to the “ dark and narrow
house,” attended by numerous indi
viduals who had assembled to pay
to a worthy fellow-citizcrt their last
sad testimonials of respect.
On Sunday morning, Mr. J. D.
M’KNIGHT, of this city—a young
man who had acquired the esteem of
those who became acquainted with
him.
On the 30th inst. at the residence
of Mr. Samuel Tenniswood, Columbia
county, Mr. Patti Lima, formerly ofN.
Jersey,aged about 28 years.leaving an af
fectionate wde, and many acquaintances

ployment, will subj'ect me to many in
conveniences, arising from want of experi
ence, it m with diffidence I announce my
self as being about to undertake, (in addi
tion to other engagements) the arduous
task ot superintending tlie Editorial de
partment of a paper I, however trust

as will enable me to present the citizens of
Alabama with a Journal, noUentirely unin
teresting ,to them, wiide my exertions in
procuring facts in relation to that State
and-othersubjects, aided by some literary
friends, will rentier it not altogether un
acceptable toothers.

acquainted, a short sketch of the place
whence the paper is to be issued.

it is the seal of justice—intended to per

cause of the republic, directly opposiU

by the name of the « Rig Haul.” It ad
joins the fraction on which the town ol
Alabama stands, and bordering on the
celebrated river of that name, to which it
it is navigable at all season* from the Gulf
of Mexico, for steam boats of a large class
—-distant about two hundred miles from
Miiledgr.villc; a similar distance from tint,
sea ports of Mobile and Blakely; about 5b
above Calmvvba, the seat of government;
mid about 12 miles below the junction ol
the Coosa and Talapooaa. It is the po.nl
at which the Adamic mails reach their
first stopping place in the state, and from
whence -Wows may be distributed through
the country with great facilities. Mont
gomery, from its high and airy situation,
the purity of its waters, flowing from its
several springs, and the elevation of the
banks along the river on both sides, which
exclude stagnant waters, is considered pe
culiarly healthy; indeed, ninny resort to
that section during the summer mouths,
on that account: It contains many roman
tic,as well as level sites for budding, and
for an infant establishment, it maybe cull
ed a pleasant, flourishing, town.

Mr. Lewis Scott, of Brecon, in die county
of Brecon, was for a long lime laboring
under an extretne lowness us spirits, so
much so, that lie was obliged to neglect
psrt of his business. He wept to Swansea,
thinking battling would be us service to
him; but to his great concern, be found no
relief. He afterwards came to Chepstow
his native place, where his mother and
friends now live; be complained to me how
II he was, and appeared much dejected,
saying lie thought lie never should be well
any more. 1 advised him to take your

boxes, and hia brother assured me a few
days ago, that he is now 44 well as he
ever knew huni being fully satisfied it was
