task of superintending the Editorial de
partment of a paper I, however trufl
that my New* arrangements will be audit
as will enable me to present the citizens o,
Alabama with a Journal, not entirely unin- j
lercsling to them, while my exertions in
ptV'curing facts in relation to that State
and other subjects, aided by some literary
friends, will render it net altogether un
ncceptable toothers.
I must, on this occasion, be permitted to
depart from the general custom of giving
luhoriouS details of the advantages result
ing from Ncietpnjicr publication*, and of
making specious promises; the one being
already sufficiently understood, and the
other calculated to deceive. I offer neith
er; merely remarking that its name pro
claims its principles,and that my
efforts will be freely exercised in endeav
ouring to promote the usefulness of the
paper and interests of the people,
It may not be amiss to give to those un
acquainted, a short sketch of the placet
whence the paper is to be issued.

is situate inthe healthy, fertile, and thickly
settled county, of the same name, of whioi»
it is the seat of justice—intended to per
petuate two distinguished martyrs* to the
cause of the republic, directly opposite
the eastern point of that highly cultivated
extensive, and fertile ti'actiof land, known
by (he name of the “ Riff Mend." It ad
joins the fraction on which the town of
Alabama stands, and bordering on the
celebrated river of tliat name, to which it
it is navigable at all seasons from the Gulf
of Mexico, for steam hoats of a large class
—distant about two hundred miles from
Milledgcvillc; u similar distance from the
sea ports of Mobile and Ulakely; about 55
above Caliawbn, the seat of governmentv
and about 12 miles below the junction of
the Coma and Tabtpooia. It is the poiit
at which the Atlantic mails reach their
first stopping place in the state, and from
whence New* may be distributed through
the country with great facilities. Mont
gomery, from its high and aiiy situation,
the purity of its waters, flowing from its
several springs, and the elevation of tho
banks along the river on both sides, which
'exclude stagnant waters; is considered pe
culiarly healthy; indeed, many resort ti»
that section during the summer mouthy
on tnat account: It contains many roman
tic,as well aslevel sites for building, and
for an infant establishment, it may be call
ed a pleasant, flourishing, town
