We, The I’eoste.
THE Fress has been truly and classical
ly called the palladium of Liberty —ln
the dissemination of useful knowledge
in the correction of political uluses, it
stands proudly pre-eminent above every o
ther institution—it is the haml-nxud to
the Arts and Sciences—the conservator
of Genius, and the Pioneer tq tbe march
of Liberty and Virtue. However corrupt
a Press may he; however ably and skil
fully conducted, it cannot long retain an
undue influence upon tfie minds of the
People;—the glare of public observation
through which it moves, like the unsulli
ed Mirror of Confucius, immediavely re
flects its deformiifity; and exposes its ve>
iialily. Some one has aptly observed, that
opinion is the (pieen of the World.* She
is emphatically so in a government like
ours. The arislouralical maxim, M the
people are their own woi st enemies ,” under
whatever semblance it may appear, will
still retain an impress of its original fea
tures; and the ken of an enlightened
community will soon penetrate the gossa
mer mantle, and drag the monster to light.
WE, IHE PEOPLE, will he particu
larly devoted to an impartial examination
of the politics of the Slate of Georgia—
The policy of its present administration is
one which fully accords »ith our feelings
and principles—and so long as it adheres
to that honest and independent, course
which has invariably marked its progress,
so long will the Editors he devoted to its
support. All other subjects of State or
National concern, will receive that por
tion of attention which they merit; and
every exertion will be used to render the
paper a medium of useful intelligence.
Such are the sentiments of the Editors
—and thus feeling aiulthinking will they
launch their little barque upon the politi
cal ocean. With Truth their chart, and
Independence their compass, they hope in
attempting to avoid Scylla they will not
founder on Charybdis; but ride in triumph
on the Sea of Principle into the Port of
Public Safety.
