•ihall the harp ihenbc'Mieirt, when he,
who first gave
To our country a name, is withdrawn
from all eyes:
Shall a minstrel of Erin stand mute by the
grave,
Where the first, where the last of her
patriots lies!
No! feint though the death song may fall
from his lipsi , ...
1 hough hi* harp, like his soul, may With
shadows be crost; .
Vet, yet shall it sound, ’nud a nation s
eclipse.
And proclaim to the world what a star
hath been lost.
What a union of all the affections »nd
powers, '
By which life is exalted, embellish’d,
refin’d,
Was embraced in that spirit—whose cen-,
tre was ours,
While its mighty circumference circled
mankind.
Oh, who that loves Erin—or who that can
see
Through the waste of her annals, that
epoch sublime —
Like a pyramid, rais’d in the desert,
whete he
And his glory stand out to the eyes of
all times.
That once lucid interval, snatch’d from the
gloom
And ihe madness of ages, when. Idled
Withhls soul,
A nation o’erlenp’d the dark bounds of her
doom,
And, for ere sacred instant, touch’d Lib
city’s goal!
Who, that ever hath heard him—hath
drank at the source
Os that wonderful eloquence, all Erin’s
own, .
In whose high draughted daring, the fire
and the force,
And the yet ontam’d spring of her spirit
are shown—
An eloquence rich, wheresoever its wave
Wander’d free and triumphant, with
tin t’s that shone, thro’
As clear as the brook’s “ Slone of lustre,”
and gave,
With the flash of the gem, »ts solidity
too.
Who, that ever approached him, when
free from the crowd,
Jn a home full of love, he delighted to
tread
Mongtlu trees which a nation had given,
which bow’d,
As if each brought a new civic crown
for hi* head.
That home, where, like him who. as fabh
hath told,
Put the rays horn his brow, that his
child might come near;
iSvcry glory forgot, the most wise of the
old
Became all that the simplest and young
est hold dear.
J* there one who hath thus, through his
or bit of life,
But at distance observed him—through
glory, through blame.
In the calm of retreat, in the grandeur of
slnfe.
Whether shining or «|pmlcd, still high
and the same.
Such a union of all that enriches life’s
h >nr,
Os the «>. eetness we love ami the great
r.ess we praise,
As that type ot simplicity blended with
power,
A child w ish a thunderbolt only pour
trays.
Oh no—not n heart that e’er knew him
but mourns
Deep, deep over the grave, where such
glory is ihitn’d —
O’er a monument Fame will preserve,

Ol the wisest, die bravest, the best of
mankind!
