A M W OT PLEASURE
Lord Chesterfield, a man of fortune, having
in his power the means of every unhallowed
gratification, and whose life was worn out in
tire grossest sinful indulgence in the close of
life made the following confessions, without
any good hope of a Letter life :
“ l have run the silly rounds of
business and of pleasure, and I have
doue with them all. I have enjoyed
all the pleasures of the world and
consequently, know their futility and
do not regret their loss. I appraise
them at their real value, which is truly
very low ; tvliert&s those who have
not experienced, always over-rate
them. They only see their gay out
side, and are dazzled with their glare.
But l have been behind the scene. I
have seen all the coarse pullies and
dirty ropes, which exhibit and move
the gaudy machine. I have seen and
smelt the tallow candles which illu
minate the whole decoration to the
astonishment and admiration of an
ignorant multitude. When I reflect
back upon what I have seen, what I
have heard, and w hat 1 have done, I
can hardly pursuade myself, that all
that frivolous hurry, and hustle, and
pleasure of the world had any reality;
butl look upon all that is past as one
of those romantic dreams which opium
commonly occasions ; and I do by no
means desire to repeat the nauseous
Hose for the sake of the fugitive dream.
.Shall I tell you that I bear this melan
choly situation with that meritorious
constancy and resignation which mos’
people boast ol ? No, for 1 really
cannot help it. 1 bear it—because I
must bear it, whether I will or po
und think of nothing but killing time,
now he is become mine enemy. It is
iny resolution to sleep in the carriage
the remainder of the journey.’*
An irresistible Appeal.— An Irish
footman, having carried a basketof
game from his master to a friend,
waited a considerable time for tfie
customary fee, but finding no pres
ent appear, scratched his head, and
said ; “ Sir, if my roaster should
say, 4 Paddy, what did the gentle
man give you what would your
honour have me to tell him r’
